MLB openers feature Strasburg, rivalries, AL vs NL

The Kansas City Royals have been absent from the playoffs since the day Billy Butler was born. They've barely had a winning season in the last two decades. They've often lost 100 games in a year.

And yet, buoyed by the best record in spring training, hope abounds ? for the Royals, for most everybody putting on a big league uniform.

"There's no reason we shouldn't be better," said Butler, the Royals' All-Star slugger. "How much better that is? I'm not a mind reader. I'm not a projector."

Ah, opening day.

The hot dogs taste better, the boxscores mean more and most every team thinks it's just a break or two away from reaching the World Series.

A dozen games were set for Monday across the majors. Star pitchers Justin Verlander, Stephen Strasburg and Adam Wainwright try to get off to great starts, old rivalries are renewed at Yankee Stadium and Dodger Stadium, and a quirky interleague schedule unfolds.

No snow is in the forecast for any ballpark on April Fools' Day, but freezing temperatures are expected at Target Field in Minnesota when Verlander and the AL champion Tigers take on the Twins.

"It's going to be cold but I've pitched in that kind of weather before," Verlander said. "I don't think about it. It's always cold in Detroit on opening day."

The season started Sunday night in Houston when the Astros, who shifted from the National League to the American League during the winter, hosted the Texas Rangers.

Long the site of baseball's traditional opener, Cincinnati was going to have a new look Monday. That's when Josh Hamilton and his new Los Angeles Angels teammates visit Cincinnati in the first interleague matchup this season.

The Astros' move left 15 teams in each league, meaning an AL vs. NL matchup most every day this season.

"It is very strange," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

On both coasts, there was a very familiar look ? Red Sox-Yankees and Giants-Dodgers.

Mariano Rivera was set for his final opening day when the banged-up Yankees hosted Boston. The New York closer is among several big names who missed most or even all of last year ? Troy Tulowitzki, Victor Martinez and John Lackey are in that group.

Injured stars Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira won't be in pinstripes for the first pitch.

"It's still the Yankees, it's still going to be a good lineup," Boston starter Jon Lester said Sunday. "They're missing a few of their big guys but anybody that fills in for them, it's like what I said, they're going to put professional at-bats together and still ? it's not going to be a walk in the park."

No easy decisions, either, for Boston manager John Farrell, one of six new skippers in the majors this year.

At Dodger Stadium, Matt Cain starts for the World Series champion San Francisco Giants when they play Los Angeles in the century-old rivalry.

It will mark the 64th season at the microphone for Dodgers announcer Vin Scully. Heck, Tigers manager Jim Leyland seems like a mere pup by comparison, now starting his 50th year in pro ball.

All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez is sidelined for the Dodgers. Around the majors, third basemen Chase Headley of San Diego, David Freese of St. Louis and Brett Lawrie of Toronto will begin the season on the disabled list.

Mets third baseman David Wright plans to be in the lineup at Citi Field to take on San Diego. He hurt his ribcage at the World Baseball Classic.

"I feel good physically," Wright said. "It would have been nice to have maybe a few more at-bats toward the end, but I didn't have that luxury."

On Tuesday, there are two more openers ? Baltimore at Tampa Bay, and Cleveland at revamped Toronto.

All 30 teams will pay tribute to the 20 children and six adults killed last December at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Players, managers, coaches and umpires will wear a memorial patch through Tuesday that includes the seal of Newtown, a black ribbon and 26 stars, and there will be a moment of silence at each stadium.

Seven weeks after teams broke out the bats and balls, players seemed ready to get going.

"I'm really prepared. Well, finally spring training is over, it was a long one," Seattle ace Felix Hernandez said Sunday, a day before his start in Oakland.

"It's another season. We're a different team. It's always special, opening day, not for me but for all the guys," he said.

Healthy Brunch Tips: Avoid Mistakes During The Celebratory Morning Meal

As many of us celebrate Easter with a festive brunch, we may find ourselves staring down a monster buffet table. What should you grab? When is it okay to indulge and what constitutes a major diet setback? We asked our favorite nutrition experts to outline their absolute brunching don'ts as we head into the holiday.

What's your strategy for eating healthfully at brunch? Tell us in the comments!

1. Brunching In The First Place

"Honestly, the biggest mistake is going to brunches at all," says Ruth Frechman, M.A., R.D., C.P.T. "It?s calorie suicide. Typically, brunches are expensive. Most people want to get their money's worth. They could easily consume 4,000 calories in one meal. The average person only needs 2,000 calories for the entire day."

2. Choosing Sweet Over Savory

This is the central question of brunch: Do you go sweet or savory? Pancakes or eggs? Now we have an answer: savory (but not too salty!).

"My number one brunch don't would be dishes that are practically made of pure carbs like pancakes or waffles. Because these are digested so quickly they're guaranteed to make your blood sugar spike and then plummet," says Karen Ansel, R.D. "While you might feel fine for a while you're inevitably going to get that carb coma feeling a couple of hours later. Adding sugary maple syrup to these only adds insult to injury. Instead pick something that's more balanced with a combination of protein, complex carbs (preferably from whole grains) and some healthy fat like huevos rancheros with avocado."

3. Confusing Brunch and Breakfast

"One of the biggest mistakes people make, they do before they even get to brunch. And that's not eating anything at all," says Rachel Begun, M.S., R.D., registered dietitian and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "You need calories to burn calories, meaning you need to eat food to get the metabolism going. If you wait until late morning or early afternoon to eat something, your metabolism is sluggish and not operating at maximum capacity. Plus, going to brunch starving is a recipe for overeating."

Joy Dubost, Ph.D R.D. C.S.S.D. agrees: "We may think because we are combining two meals we can [eat more]," she says. "But if you are not careful on choices and portion-size, brunch can quickly exceed calories consumed in two separate meals."

Instead, try to have a healthful snack in the morning before you head out the door -- something that combines fiber and protein, like low-fat cheese with an apple or yogurt with berries and slivered almonds.

4. Ordering From The Drink Menu

Alcoholic brunch drinks like bloody marys and "adult" coffee drinks are an easy way to go overboard on the calories without even realizing it. "Consuming multiple beverages, particularly those that are higher in calories, can end up being a high calorie meal on its own," explains Dubost. "I would recommend keeping it to one 12-ounce beverage. For lighter options you may want to choose mimosas or wine spritzers."

5. Beware Customizable Options

We're looking at you, omelet bar. The egg base might be just fine, but add enough meats and cheeses and you've got a calorie bomb on your hands.

"Many dishes can be higher in calories because we load them with numerous ingredients," says Dubost. "Try to keep it more basic or include various flavorful vegetables."

6. Thinking About Calories, Fat ... But Not Sodium

Between the bloody mary mix, hollandaise sauce and hash browns, brunch can amount to a salt lick. And while you might choose egg whites for your omelet and salad on the side, it won't do much to lower the sodium of your meal. That means you can easily surpass the government's daily recommendation of 2,300 mg within a matter of bites.

Bluenote Is a Secure Note Taking, Tasks, and Password Manager for Mac

Bluenote Is a Secure Note Taking, Tasks, and Password Manager for MacBluenote Is a Secure Note Taking, Tasks, and Password Manager for Mac Mac: If you don't want to just leave your notes, to-dos, and passwords sitting around, Bluenote is a Mac app that encrypts everything you put into it and locks it all behind a password so nobody can see what you're up to.

Bluenote is a number of different things. At its core, it's a to-do and note-taking app that encrypts everything. It organizes those notes and tasks in simple lists and you can select from a huge set of icons so you can quickly spot what you're looking for. The nice thing is that Bluenote automatically encrypts and saves everything you do, so you won't need to worry about saving or selecting security settings. Additionally, Bluenote has a password manager built in to store your passwords and offer suggestions to make better ones. It's not nearly as robust as something like Lastpass, but it's better than just leaving your passwords hanging out in your Keychain.

Bluenote's also incredibly easy to use. Once you fire up the app, you're given a tutorial of the features, but it's hardly necessary. Adding tasks and notes is as simple as you'd expect, and you can organize them by just clicking and dragging. The interface is easy on the eyes and you're never distracted finding out how to do something. Syncing support is currently missing, but it's on its way in a future update. If you're looking for a way to hide your notes and tasks behind a encrypted password wall, Bluenote is worth a look.

If Steve King Runs for Senate, His Opponents Will Have a Lot to Work With

Earlier this month Rep. Steve King said there was a better than 50 percent chance that he would run for the Iowa Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Tom Harkin. A staunch conservative with a history of saying inflammatory things, it would be an understatement to say that King is a divisive political figure. To take the state, he?d have to overcome money from a Karl Rove organization aimed at weeding out fringe GOP candidates from winning primaries, and win over districts far less conservative than his own. But his biggest obstacle may be overcoming 10-plus years of giving his opponents sound bites to run against him. Here are a few that you?ll likely hear on repeat if he runs:

Compared Immigrants to Dogs: During last year?s campaign, King made news when a comment of his at a town hall seemed to paint a parallel between immigrants and canines. In talking about which immigrants should be allowed to come into this country, King drew from his hunting experience for a metaphor: ?You want a good bird dog?? he told the crowd in Pocahontas, Iowa. ?You want one that?s going to be aggressive? Pick the one that?s the friskiest ? not the one that?s over there sleeping in the corner.? King went on to say that the United States should have ?the pick of the litter.?

Later, King would tell reporters that he meant no harm by the comment and that it was being blown out of proportion.

"It was a compliment ... They knew it was a compliment, they turned it into an insult because they're professional hyperventilators,? he said.

Waded into Legitimate Rape Debate: Former Rep. Todd Akin is the poster child for why Karl Rove feels the need to fight against fringe GOP candidates. His comment about ?legitimate rape? became all anyone could talk about during the last election, and very well could have kept Missouri in Democratic hands.

And King just couldn?t help himself by becoming part of the conversation. As a co-sponsor for a bill called the ?No Taxpayers Funding for Abortion Act,? King was asked whether exemptions should be made for victims of statutory rape or incest, such as a 12-year old girl who gets pregnant.

"Well I just haven't heard of that being a circumstance that's been brought to me in any personal way,? he said. ?I'd be open to discussion about that subject matter.?

Various media outlets picked up this comment as a sign that King may have partially agreed with Akin?s stance. And while they weren't nearly as controversial as Akin?s comments at the time, that doesn?t mean they won?t become part of the conversation in a senatorial election.

Called Joe McCarthy a Hero: Senator Joseph McCarthy?s name has become synonymous with paranoid witch hunts. And yet, in 2005, King called the former chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (or HUAC) a ?hero.?

?His tactics were relentless, his personality invidious, and his habits sometimes excessive,? King said. ?Nonetheless, he was a central figure in the movement to remove communist spies and sympathizers from our most sensitive government positions.?

And it?s not just a one time thing. For years, King has been pushing the sentiment, saying?in 2010 that he supported the re-establishment of HUAC? "but I would support a different committee name so that we don't have to deal with the history, and move forward."

Not a Fan of Gay Marriage: When the Iowa Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples could get married in the state, King warned that if they weren?t careful the Hawkeye State could become the ?Mecca? of gay marriage.? Anyone who didn?t already know how he felt about the issue needn?t look any farther than a 2003 press release he issued after a Sioux City judge granted two lesbians a divorce.

?Unicorns, leprechauns, gay marriages in Iowa ? these are all things you will never find because they just don?t exist,? he said.

But, if you want to look beyond that, check out when he said same-sex marriage was really just a push for socialism.

Maybe He'll Start His Own Country Anyway: Democrats don't want him to become senator, and Rove and other Republicans worry he may hurt their chances at picking up the seat. For them, they might rather he just start his own country somewhere and stay out of Iowa. Who knows, maybe he will. After the House of Representatives passed Obamacare in 2010, King told a crowd of Tea Party activists that he was thinking about it.?

"If I could start a country with a bunch of people, they?d be the folks who were standing with us the last few days," he told the crowd. "Let?s hope we don?t have to do that!?Let?s beat that other side to a pulp! Let?s take them out. Let?s chase them down. There?s going to be a reckoning!"

Central African Republic coup leader says will review resource deals

By Ange Aboa and Paul-Marin Ngoupana

BANGUI (Reuters) - Central African Republic's new President Michel Djotodia, who seized power last week, said on Friday he would review resource deals signed by the previous government and promised to step down at elections in 2016.

Djotodia, a former civil servant turned rebel leader, said he would seek aid from former colonial power France and the United States to retrain the ill-disciplined army, which was easily overrun by fighters from his Seleka rebel coalition.

Paris and Washington have called for the rebels to adhere to a power-sharing deal signed in the Gabonese capital Libreville in January which mapped out a transition to elections in 2016 at which then-President Francois Bozize was forbidden from running.

"We are going to act according to the spirit of the Libreville agreements," Djotodia told his first news conference since seizing power. "Anyone currently in power supporting our takeover will not contest the next presidential elections, myself included."

The rebel takeover has been strongly condemned internationally. The African Union suspended Central African Republic's membership and imposed sanctions on Seleka leaders, including Djotodia.

A Pentagon spokesman said the U.S. Defense Department had had no contact with the rebels and it condemned their illegal seizure of power. "We call on all involved parties to adhere to the Libreville Agreement and work to resolve this conflict," Major Rob Firman said.

In a bid to tap the country's under-exploited mineral wealth, Bozize had awarded China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) rights to explore for oil at Boromata, in the country's northeast near the border with Chad.

South Africa's DIG oil is also prospecting in the southeast of the country, near the town of Carnot.

"I will ask the relevant ministers to see whether things were done badly, to try to sort them out," Djotodia said, when asked about resource licenses awarded to Chinese and South African firms by Bozize.

Bozize, who fled to Cameroon immediately after the coup, has requested asylum in the West African nation of Benin, said the foreign minister of Benin, Nassirou Bako.

"He has not yet arrived in Cotonou and everything indicates he is still in Cameroon," Bako said late on Thursday.

CHANGE OF DIRECTION

Although Central African Republic has deposits of gold, diamonds, oil and uranium, these remain largely untapped, and the coup-prone nation is one of the poorest on Earth.

"We will rely on the European Union to help us develop this country," Djotodia said, adding that 80 percent of the country's foreign aid came from the bloc. "When we have been sick, the European Union was at our bedside. It will not abandon us now."

Djotodia's comments appeared to mark a change of tack from his predecessor Bozize's close ties to South Africa, with which he had signed a fresh bilateral Defense agreement in January.

South Africa deployed a training mission of about 400 troops in Central African Republic, 13 of whom were killed and 27 wounded when they fought rebel forces in the outskirts of Bangui at the weekend.

The Red Cross announced on Friday it had recovered 78 bodies from the streets since the rebel attack on the capital, which began on Saturday.

South African media and a senior Ugandan officer said on Thursday that South African soldiers were gathered in Uganda for a "new mission" to Central African Republic.

A Ugandan military source said on Friday that a transport plane carrying hundreds of South African troops left Entebbe air base on Thursday headed for the central African region.

South African army spokesman Brigadier-General Xolani Mabanga told Reuters: "We don't have any troops that are en route to CAR ... We are still awaiting government instructions to tell us whether to withdraw from CAR or to reinforce in CAR."

Shoe thrown at Pakistan's Musharraf at court

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A shoe was thrown at former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf as he headed to court to face legal charges after returning from self-imposed exile.

Local TV channels showed video of the shoe being thrown at Musharraf inside a court building in the southern city of Karachi on Friday.

Musharraf is seen surrounded by a mob of supporters and journalists and it was difficult to tell from the video who threw the shoe or if it hit the former leader.

Musharraf, who first seized power in a military coup in 1999, returned to Pakistan last weekend. He faces legal charges, including some originating from a probe of the 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

HBT: Marlins' Morrison eyes return by mid-May

Logan Morrison has missed all of spring training as he recovers from knee surgery, but the Marlins first baseman is scheduled to take a big step in his comeback when he starts throwing, fielding, and running next week.

Morrison told Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald that he?s hoping to come off the disabled list by mid-May and described himself as ?frustrated? by having to sit out so much action.

Casey Kotchman has made the Marlins after signing a minor-league contract and will open the season as the starting first baseman. It?ll be interesting to see what happens if Kotchman fares well, because while Morrison has played quite a bit of left field in the past the Marlins probably wouldn?t want him in the outfield post-knee surgery and Kotchman can only play first base.

Actress Ashley Judd won't run for US Senate

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) ? Actress Ashley Judd announced Wednesday she won't run for U.S. Senate in Kentucky against Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, saying she had given serious thought to a campaign but decided her responsibilities and energy need to be focused on her family.

The former Kentucky resident tweeted her decision.

"Regretfully, I am currently unable to consider a campaign for the Senate. I have spoken to so many Kentuckians over these last few months who expressed their desire for a fighter for the people & new leader," Judd wrote.

"While that won't be me at this time, I will continue to work as hard as I can to ensure the needs of Kentucky families are met by returning this Senate seat to whom it rightfully belongs: the people & their needs, dreams, and great potential. Thanks for even considering me as that person & know how much I love our Commonwealth. Thank you!"

Her publicist Cara Tripicchio confirmed Judd's decision.

The 44-year-old Judd had hinted last week that she was nearing a decision about the race.

Now living in suburban Nashville, Tenn., Judd has said little publicly about her intentions. However, she has been meeting with several Democratic leaders, including Gov. Steve Beshear, to discuss a possible run.

Defeating McConnell would be the Democrats' biggest prize of the 2014 election. His seat is one of 14 that Republicans are defending while Democrats try to hold onto 21, hoping to retain or add to their 55-45 edge.

The star of such films as "Double Jeopardy" and "Kiss the Girls" is known for her liberal political views and she would have been running in a largely conservative state where Republicans hold both Senate seats and five of the six seats in the U.S. House.

Former State Treasurer Jonathan Miller, a Judd supporter, said she would have been a strong candidate.

"As a Kentuckian and someone who was really enthusiastic about her as a candidate, this wasn't the news I was hoping for," Miller said. "But as her friend, from the first time we talked about the race last summer, I was very candid about the grueling nature of politics. It's become a very unpleasant business and running against Mitch McConnell would be an extraordinarily difficult and grueling experience."

McConnell, who spent some $20 million on his last election and who has already raised $10 million for the next one, had already been taunting would-be Democratic challengers in a comical online video intended to raise second thoughts about taking on a politician known as brawler. The video plays on the fact that Judd lives in Tennessee.

Republican-leaning group American Crossroads in its own online video also plays on the Tennessee angle and ties her closely to President Barack Obama, who is unpopular in Kentucky.

University of Louisville political scientist Laurie Rhodebeck said Judd certainly wasn't frightened out of the race.

"She doesn't strike me as a shrinking violet," Rhodebeck said. "I think the real issue would be how much disruption she wanted in her life. This was the kind of thing that she would have to throw herself into 100 percent in order to make it worthwhile."

Judd and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti separated early this year after marrying in his native Scotland in 2001.

Judd's decision not to enter the race leaves the Democratic Party in search of a candidate. Many of Kentucky's top Democrats, including Beshear, have said they won't run. However, a rising star within the party, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, hasn't ruled the race out. Grimes declined comment Wednesday evening through her spokeswoman, Lynn Sowards Zellen.

'Harry Potter' actor Richard Griffiths dies at 65

LONDON (AP) ? Richard Griffiths, a versatile British actor who won a Tony Award for "The History Boys" and played the boy wizard's unsympathetic Uncle Vernon Dursley in the "Harry Potter" movies, has died. He was 65.

Agent Simon Beresford announced Friday that Griffiths died a day earlier of complications following heart surgery at University Hospital in Coventry, central England.

He paid tribute to Griffiths as "a remarkable man and one of our greatest and best-loved actors."

Griffiths appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows, but will be most widely remembered as a pair of contrasting uncles ? flamboyant Uncle Monty in 1980s cult classic "Withnail and I" and the hero's grudging Muggle guardian in the "Harry Potter" series.

Griffiths once said he liked playing Uncle Vernon "because that gives me a license to be horrible to kids."

But "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe paid tribute to the actor, saying "I was proud to say I knew him."

A large man and a huge stage presence, Griffiths was one of Britain's leading theater actors, creating roles including the charismatic teacher Hector at the emotional heart of Alan Bennett's school drama "The History Boys" ? a part he took to Broadway, winning a Tony, and repeated for the film adaptation.

National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner, who directed "The History Boys," called Griffiths' performance in that play "a masterpiece of wit, delicacy, mischief and desolation, often simultaneously."

Griffiths also played poet W.H. Auden in Bennett's "The Habit of Art," a hugely persuasive performance despite the lack of physical resemblance between the two men.

Griffiths was born in northeast England's Thormaby-on-Tees in 1947 to parents who were deaf and mute ? an experience he felt contributed to his exceptional ability to listen and to communicate physically.

He left school at 15 but later studied drama and spent a decade with the Royal Shakespeare Company, making a specialty of comic parts such as the buffoonish knight Falstaff.

On television, he played a crime-solving chef in 1990s' British TV series "Pie in the Sky," and he had parts in movies ranging from "Chariots of Fire" and "Gandhi" to "The Naked Gun 2 ?."

Known for his sense of humor, large store of rambling theatrical anecdotes and occasional bursts of temper, Griffiths was renowned for shaming audience members whose cell phones rang during plays by stopping the performance and ordering the offender to leave.

Griffiths' last major stage role was in a West End production of Neil Simon's comedy "The Sunshine Boys" last year opposite Danny DeVito. The pair had been due to reprise their roles in Los Angeles later this year.

In 2007 he appeared in a London and Broadway production of "Equus" alongside the then 17-year-old Radcliffe.

"Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career," Radcliffe said Friday.

"In August 2000, before official production had even begun on Potter, we filmed a shot outside the Dursleys', which was my first ever shot as Harry. I was nervous and he made me feel at ease.

?"Seven years later, we embarked on 'Equus' together. It was my first time doing a play but, terrified as I was, his encouragement, tutelage and humor made it a joy.

"In fact, any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence."

Griffiths is survived by his wife, Heather Gibson.

New Theory of How Giant Stars Grow Unveiled

Baby stars can grow to an incredibly large size ? 10 times more massive than the sun, at the least ? if they are cocooned in a group of older stars feeding gas to the youngsters, a new study suggests.

This theory could explain how young stars get so big, rather than pushing away gas as they grow and starving themselves once they get about eight times as massive as the sun.

Researchers spotted evidence of this type of "convergent constructive feedback" with the Herschel Space Observatory. It took pictures of a large dust and gas cloud called Westerhout 3, located about 6,500 light-years from Earth, in wavelengths ranging from infrared to part of the microwave spectrum.

"This observation may lift the veil on the formation of the most massive stars, which remains, so far, poorly understood," said Alana Rivera-Ingraham, lead author of the study. She was at the University of Toronto when the research was performed, and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Research Institute of Astrophysics and Planetology in France. [Star Quiz: Test Your Stellar Smarts]

?

Star corral

?

Stars typically form in the midst of huge gas clouds. The force of gravity squeezes the gas until it is compressed enough to start the nuclear fusion process that fuels stars.

Newborn stars are constantly balancing two opposite forcesas they grow. Gravity sucks in gaseous material to feed the protostar, while radiation pressure emanating from the protostar resists the inward pull of gravity and pushes away some of the gas surrounding it.

The bigger a star gets, the greater the radiation pressure, until it reaches a point where the gas should ? by conventional theory ? be blown away.

The densest part of Westerhout 3's gas cloud, researchers noted, is enclosed by a crowd of older, large stars.

That thick environment is no coincidence, scientists said. Providing the older stars are in the right position ? surrounding a gas reservoir ? the gas they push away through radiation could compress and form new stars.

"The process is similar to the way a group of street cleaners armed with leaf blowers can stack leaves in a pile ? by pushing from all sides at the same time," officials at the University of Toronto said in a statement. "This corralling of dense gas can give birth to new, high-mass stars."

The group still needs to test this theory through simulation, and by comparing observations of Westerhout 3 to those of similar stellar gas clouds.

"Only then will [scientists] be able to discern the mechanism ? collective feeding or not ? that gives rise to high-mass stars in these giant clouds," according to the statement.

Another solution proposed

In 2009, another group of researchers proposed a different way that stars can grow massive.

The group ran a three-dimensional simulation of how a large interstellar gas cloud falls into itself and creates a huge star. The computer showed instabilities where the radiation sent part of the cloud out into space, while gas continued to spiral in toward the star through other channels.

"This shows that you don't need any exotic mechanisms; massive stars can form through accretion processes just like low-mass stars," study leader Mark Krumholz of the University of California, Santa Cruz said in a 2009 SPACE.com interview.

Previous to that research, scientists believed radiation pressure would push away the gas surrounding a protostar before it could reach a mass 20 times that of the sun.

Meeting in the Middle: Training as a Business Opportunity in Egypt ...

Morocco World News

New York, March 27, 2013

The financial crisis has done its best to put Egypt?s economy away in the last couple of years, but Egypt has dug its heels in. Egyptian Government and institutions are hitting back with measures to restore the economy to health.

Meanwhile, it can be hard to start up or run a business in these conditions. How do you do it? There?s work to do and you need people to do it, but there are also labor costs to consider.

On the other side of the equation, what can you do if you?re job hunting but don?t have all the skills required for the job?
The answer lies in training for all.

Train us up

With 750,000 people entering the Egyptian job market each year, and youth unemployment high in the country, training is a solution for job hunters who need to learn new skills and for companies who want to cut their labor costs. While providing them with the skills they need, businesses can offer young people an opportunity and still get the job done.
However, training is more than just a way to cut labor costs. It?s a potentially lucrative business opportunity for entrepreneurs who play their cards right. There?s a distinct lack of in skills among the Egyptian population. Companies who provide training tailored to employment in a specific sector, such as computer training or language tuition, can really capitalize on this.

Where should you look if you?re a business?

Look to the universities. Of the 750,000 people who are entering the Egyptian labor market each year, 200,000 are graduates.
Interestingly, more and more young people are studying business at university. Community services, development, consultancy, communications, social media marketing and IT have also become popular options.

Equipped with theoretical knowledge, graduates leave university hungry to prove themselves. Not only that, they can offer fresh ideas. Many graduates are turning down job offers which they consider themselves to be overqualified for. They?ll be glad of the opportunity.

Where should you look if you?re a graduate?

Many graduates in Egypt are seeking their fortune abroad. But it doesn?t have to be this way. Right now, the industries that offer the most jobs are business, marketing and commercial sales, IT, customer support, engineering and sales and retail.

Of course, starting up your own business is an option. The Internet has changed the face of employment. As governments across the globe wrestle with unemployment figures, many people have made ends meet by setting up their own business, and have used the Internet to do so.

Whether you?re a graduate starting your own business or an entrepreneur who already has your company up and running, remember you?ll need to do some business banking. Despite the turmoil, Egypt still offers great banking facilities. Not only can you manage your business finances, but also benefit from the advice that banks offer with their services for businesses.

And if you?re looking for work, providing work or thinking about setting up your own business, you should consider the option of training. Be it to make money, increase your job prospects or keep your labor costs down, it will get you where you want to be in Egypt.

Orlando Family Style: Local Antiques ~ Dutch Door Antiques

This cute little antique store is nestled among the other cool shops in the Audubon Park Garden District. ?I like that it wasn't crammed with a bunch of "stuff". ?I felt it was the right amount to look around and not feel overwhelmed. ?You'll find what you would expect at an antique store; tables, chairs, lighting, pictures, accessories and other eccentric items. ?The pieces are more towards the "romantic & rustic" look; which to me adds charm. ?The items I looked at all seemed to be reasonably priced as well.?

I found the store to be welcoming and offering friendly service. ?I probably ended up talking to the owners more than I did browsing around the store. ?Dutch Door Antiques really compliments this neighborhood plaza; enjoy an afternoon with lunch and do a little shopping and top it off with a treat from Blue Bird or Rainbow Sno-Cones.

They have a Facebook Page with many pictures of their inventory. ?I'm not sure how often they get new stuff in, but if you're in the neighborhood worth a visit to check out. ?

I liked that it was another local store where there are eclectic items I would enjoy decorating my house with.

Source: Chemical weapons unlikely in Syria attack

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. has strong indications that chemical weapons were not used in the attack in Syria's Aleppo province on Tuesday, a U.S. administration official said Thursday.

While officials won't entirely rule out the possibility, the official said that additional intelligence-gathering in recent days has led the U.S. to believe more strongly that it was not a weaponized chemical attack. The official wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter because it involved intelligence gathering and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The U.S. and allies have been looking into allegations by the Syrian regime that rebels carried out a chemical weapons attack on Khan al-Assal village in northern Aleppo province. The rebels have blamed regime forces.

Syria is widely believed to have a large stockpile of chemical weapons. And, there are fears President Bashar Assad would use those weapons against his people in the ongoing civil war and also concerns that al-Qaida-linked rebels might obtain and use them.

The United Nations announced Thursday that it would investigate the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria, which would amount to a crime against humanity. The probe could also help determine the security of the weapons stockpile.

Intelligence reports late last year showed the Syrian regime may be readying its chemical weapons and could be desperate enough to use them. Those reports prompted a sharp warning from President Barack Obama, who said that Syria's use or movement of its chemical weapons stockpile would change his "calculus" about whether the U.S. might intervene militarily in the conflict.

Although officials won't detail the latest intelligence that was gathered, the U.S. and its allies are generally able to use information from surveillance, intercepted communications, people at the scene, medical and autopsy reports, and soil samples, if available.

Cyber attack on S. Korea allegedly from Chinese IP

By Steve Keating ORLANDO, Florida, March 20 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy's decision to skip the Arnold Palmer Invitational surprised the tournament host, who expressed his disappointment on Wednesday that the world number one was not at Bay Hill this week. The 83-year-old Palmer said he had jokingly suggested he might break McIlroy's arm if he did not show up but did not try to force the young Northern Irishman into making an appearance. "Frankly, I thought he was going to play, and I was as surprised as a lot of people when he decided he was not going to play," said Palmer. ...

House committee cuts portions of proposed gaming law - Fox 59 News

Indiana?s gaming industry suffered a setback Wednesday.? A House committee cut out portions of a proposed gaming law that would allow live table games at Racinos and let riverboat casinos move on land.

Opponents said live table games are unnecessary and could possibly hurt casinos on Indiana?s borders.

Those in support of the change feel bringing in dealers would create new jobs and make Indiana casinos more attractive.

Lawmakers said this bill could be debated in the final days of the session next month when the House and Senate try to hammer out differences on this and other bills.

Congress to force Postal Service to keep Saturday delivery

By Elvina Nawaguna

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congress foiled the financially beleaguered U.S. Postal Service's plan to end Saturday delivery of first-class mail when it passed legislation on Thursday requiring six-day delivery.

The Postal Service, which lost $16 billion last year, said last month it wanted to switch to five-day mail service to save $2 billion annually.

Congress traditionally has included a provision in legislation to fund the federal government each year that has prevented the Postal Service from reducing delivery service. The Postal Service had asked Congress not to include the provision this time around.

Despite the request, the House of Representatives on Thursday gave final approval to legislation that maintains the provision, sending it to President Barack Obama to sign into law. The Senate approved the measure on Wednesday.

But some lawmakers who support the Postal Service's plan have said there may still be some room for it to change its delivery schedule. They point out that the language requiring six-day delivery is vague and does not prohibit altering what products it delivers on Saturdays.

The Postal Service has said that while it would not pick up or deliver first-class mail, magazines and direct mail, it would continue to deliver packages and pharmaceutical drugs on Saturdays.

Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Representative Darrell Issa of California on Thursday told the USPS Board of Governors to move forward with implementing the five-day delivery plan for mail.

"The Board of Governors has a fiduciary responsibility to utilize its legal authority to implement modified 6-day mail delivery as recently proposed," the lawmakers said in their letter to the USPS board.

The Postal Service, they said, is in such dire financial need that it must implement all measures to resolve its problems.

LEGALITY IN QUESTION

Several polls have shown a majority of the public supports ending six-day delivery of first-class mail.

The plan for a new delivery schedule would respond to customers' changing needs and help keep the Postal Service from becoming a burden to taxpayers, Postal Service spokesman David Partenheimer said.

A number of lawmakers and trade groups said the plan to cut Saturday mail service is illegal because the Postal Service requires Congress' approval before it makes such a decision.

Democratic Representative Gerald Connolly of Virginia said in a letter to the Government Accountability Office on Thursday that the Postal Service is still bound by the six-day requirement.

"Unfortunately, the Postmaster General continues to stonewall members of Congress, withholding his legal justifications for eliminating Saturday delivery from postal customers and the American public," Connolly said.

Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, said in a statement on Thursday that cutting Saturday mail delivery would harm rural communities and small businesses and "only serve to accelerate a financial ?death spiral' for the Postal Service."

DROWNING IN LOSSES

The Postal Service, an independent agency not funded by taxpayers, has said it could need a taxpayer bailout of more than $47 billion by 2017 if Congress does not give it flexibility to change its business model and provide it relief from huge benefit payments.

It had planned to drop Saturday first-class mail delivery in August.

Ending six-day, first-class mail delivery is part of the Postal Service's larger plan to cut costs and raise revenues.

The mail carrier loses $25 million each day. The vast majority of the losses come from heavy mandatory payments into its future retirees' health fund take a toll, but it has also suffered as more Americans communicate by email and the Internet.

The Postal Service could run out of money by October if Congress does not provide legislative relief, some experts have estimated.

"Once the delivery schedule language ... becomes law, we will discuss it with our Board of Governors to determine our next steps," Partenheimer said.

La Salle, James Madison advance from First Four

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) ? Guards, guards everywhere. And they can shoot.

La Salle gets to take its uncharacteristic approach ? not much size but lots of shots and lots of points ? back to a city that has a little nostalgia for the Explorers.

Tyrone Garland led the guard-driven offense with 22 points, and the Explorers wrapped up the NCAA tournament's First Four by getting the better of an old-fashioned shootout, beating Boise State 80-71 on Wednesday night.

It was a notable moment for the 13th-seeded Explorers (22-9), who hadn't even been in the tournament for 21 years. Now, they head to Kansas City to play fourth-seeded Kansas State on Friday.

Kansas City? That's the place where they beat Bradley to win the national title in 1954.

"Unbelievable tradition here," coach John Giannini said. "I think people have tended to have forgotten what a basketball power La Salle was for over four decades. So it's a big deal. It's a big deal to re-establish that. It's a big deal for people who attended La Salle and love La Salle, who had great basketball, and certainly they've longed for that."

In the first game, A.J. Davis stepped in for James Madison's suspended leading scorer and had 20 points, leading the Dukes to a 68-55 win over LIU Brooklyn.

James Madison (21-14), which won its first NCAA tournament game in 30 years, next takes on top-seeded Indiana, also in Dayton.

The Dukes were without suspended starter Rayshawn Goins for the first half, but built a big lead. After the Blackbirds (20-14) rallied to take a brief lead, the Dukes surged again to win going away by closing the game on a 10-2 run.

Davis opened the game with an emphatic 3 as if to say this was his time. And he didn't let up.

"Coach said, 'Don't do anything outside of your character, just be humble and play your game,'" Davis said. "While Rayshawn was sitting out, a couple of guys came off the bench and stepped up for us."

Charles Cooke, who hadn't scored in three of his last four games, added 15 points and defensive specialist Andre Nation added 14 for the Dukes, who were winless in the NCAA tournament since 1983.

Jamal Olasewere had 20 points and 10 rebounds and C.J. Garner 16 points for the Blackbirds, who have lost in their first game in each of their six trips to the tournament, including the last three years.

Goins, JMU's leading scorer (12.7) and rebounder (7.4), was suspended for the first half following a weekend arrest. Police in Harrisonburg, Va., said they were called to break up a party early Sunday morning and Goins was shouting obscenities at them. He looked out of synch when he got into the game, but later added four points in the decisive run that put the game out of reach.

Now, the Dukes have taken a step toward reminding people how dangerous they used to be.

Lou Campanelli coached the Dukes to mammoth NCAA upsets over Georgetown in 1981, Ohio State in 1982 and West Virginia in 1983. The 1982 team lost to eventual national champion North Carolina ? led by Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins ? 52-50 in the final minute.

But James Madison's last appearance came with Lefty Driesell prowling the sideline in 1994.

Coach Matt Brady figured his Dukes have one huge advantage over Indiana since they've already played on the court. And they're already in Dayton.

"I'm hoping they haven't arrived in town just yet and they get here right before the game starts," he said with a laugh.

La Salle was in a mood to remember history, too. And, maybe to make a little more as well.

It'll be tough to play any better on offense in KC than they did Wednesday night.

Ramon Galloway, one of the Atlantic 10's top scorers, added 21 points in a fast-paced offense that did pretty much whatever it wanted. The Explorers shot a season-high 63 percent from the field ? 16 of 22 in the second half.

Garland went 9 of 11 from the field ? his best shooting game of the season ? and the Explorers were 11 of 21 behind the arc.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," Garland said. "When I came here, coach told me I could help him win games and get him to the next step."

Thirteenth-seeded Boise State (21-11) got its first at-large bid and was looking for the first NCAA tournament win in its history. The Broncos were up to it in a game of try-to-top-this shooting, falling to 0-6 in the tournament.

Anthony Drmic had a game-high 28 points for the Broncos, who shot 49 percent but trailed most of the way.

"They shot incredible tonight," Drmic said. "All credit to them."

Update your iPhone now to fix a passcode vulnerability

Anyone ? with some practice, and really great timing ? can bypass your iPhone's passcode in order to make calls, send out emails and messages, scroll through call histories, view contacts and more, thanks to a security flaw in the iOS operating system. Until now. Apple put an end to these shenanigans with a software update on Tuesday.

The latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 6.1.3, patches the lockscreen vulnerability (while also including miscellaneous bug fixes).

As we reported in February, Adrian D'Urso of JailbreakNation was among the first publicize the security flaw, demonstrating in a YouTube video how to circumvent the passcode. Following D'Urso's instructions, we were able to confirm the hole on an iPhone 5 and iPhone 4, both running iOS 6.1.

We again attempted the iPhone experiment after the Tuesday update, but this time, were unable to gain access. We're disappointed that it took over a month for Apple to fix this security hole, but it appears to have patched things up.

If you're ready to install iOS 6.1.3 on your iOS device, then connect the gadget to iTunes and hit the "check for updates" button. (Alternatively, head into your device's "Settings" menu, select the "General" tab, and tap the "Software Updates" option to download the update over the air.)

Exploring The Historical Sites Of Lloret De Mar

Situated on the north-eastern coast of Spain, there are few better places for a holiday soaking up the sun than Lloret de Mar. Barcelona, the large and vibrant city only 70 kilometres away, makes the seaside resort town very easy to get to from abroad. The area is considered to be one of the hottest destinations on the Costa Brava, and every year locals and tourists alike flock to the golden sands and beautiful blue waters of Lloret de Mar. Barcelonas nightlife is close enough to give visitors a chance to experience a night out in "big city style", but during the days, it's wonderful to stay put and explore the local area. With its rich history, if you are ready for a break from the beaches, there are plenty of places to explore, in and around the town. Be sure to check out the Sant Pere del Bosc chapel and the Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage.

Sant Pere del Bosc chapel

One of the most interesting historical aspects of the area are the churches, chapels and hermitages of Lloret de Mar. Barcelona provides a place to see the larger, more famous cathedrals, but when you are on your beachside holiday, be sure to visit the Sant Pere del Bosc chapel. Located just five kilometres out of the centre of the town, the Sant Pere del Bosc chapel originally dates back to the 10th century and was inhabited by Benedictines until 1694, when it was torched by the French. Within the next hundred years, the church was rebuilt in a Baroque style. Later, in 1860, the land and chapel were purchased by Count of Jaruco, who turned it into what is still one of the most impressive estates in the area.

Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage

Built in 1079, the Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage was the first Parish church of the town of Lloret de Mar. Barcelona has nothing like this charming Romanesque church situated a mere two and a half kilometres from the centre of the town. While in the region, be sure to make the short walk to the Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage and get a better idea of the legend; it tells that the sea once covered the entire plain and the church was built just outside of the waters edge. The hermitage itself was the towns main church until the year 1522, and it was built in a unique Romanesque style that was altered somewhat during the renovations after the Civil War. Inside are frescos by Calandria, and the bell tower is a unique and quirky feature with its architectural features that dont quite seem to work.

TMobile's LTE ambitions get real network expansion, the BlackBerry Z10 and an OTA update for the Galaxy Note II

AT&T's failed acquisition was the best thing to ever happen to T-Mobile. As a consequence of the failed merger, the fourth place wireless carrier received AWS spectrum in over 100 markets, a cash payout in the billions and an extensive roaming agreement with Ma Bell. All of which pushed the last place carrier into a stronger competitive standing. Now, as it nears the completion of a merger of its own devising with MetroPCS, the operator's gearing up to make good on its LTE promise. Starting today, an over-the-air update will begin rolling out to existing Galaxy Note II handsets that enables the previously dormant LTE radio. Which, if you've been keeping close tabs on Magenta's LTE plans, falls right on schedule with its previously announced 2013 deployment timeline.
