Ketamine improved bipolar depression within minutes, study suggests

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Bipolar disorder is a serious and debilitating condition where individuals experience severe swings in mood between mania and depression. The episodes of low or elevated mood can last days or months, and the risk of suicide is high.

Antidepressants are commonly prescribed to treat or prevent the depressive episodes, but they are not universally effective. Many patients still continue to experience periods of depression even while being treated, and many patients must try several different types of antidepressants before finding one that works for them. In addition, it may take several weeks of treatment before a patient begins to feel relief from the drug's effects.

For these reasons, better treatments for depression are desperately needed. A new study in Biological Psychiatry this week confirms that scientists may have found one in a drug called ketamine.

A group of researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health, led by Dr. Carlos Zarate, previously found that a single dose of ketamine produced rapid antidepressant effects in depressed patients with bipolar disorder. They have now replicated that finding in an independent group of depressed patients, also with bipolar disorder. Replication is an important component of the scientific method, as it helps ensure that the initial finding wasn't accidental and can be repeated.

In this new study, they administered a single dose of ketamine and a single dose of placebo to a group of patients on two different days, two weeks apart. The patients were then carefully monitored and repeatedly completed ratings to 'score' their depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts.

When the patients received ketamine, their depression symptoms significantly improved within 40 minutes, and remained improved over 3 days. Overall, 79% of the patients improved with ketamine, but 0% reported improvement when they received placebo.

Importantly, and for the first time in a group of patients with bipolar depression, they also found that ketamine significantly reduced suicidal thoughts. These antisuicidal effects also occurred within one hour. Considering that bipolar disorder is one of the most lethal of all psychiatric disorders, these study findings could have a major impact on public health.

"Our finding that a single infusion of ketamine produces rapid antidepressant and antisuicidal effects within one hour and that is fairly sustained is truly exciting," Dr. Zarate commented. "We think that these findings are of true importance given that we only have a few treatments approved for acute bipolar depression, and none of them have this rapid onset of action; they usually take weeks or longer to have comparable antidepressant effects as ketamine does."

Ketamine is an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, which means that it works by blocking the actions of NMDA. Dr. Zarate added, "Importantly, confirmation that blocking the NMDA receptor complex is involved in generating rapid antidepressant and antisuicidal effects offers an avenue for developing the next generation of treatments for depression that are radically different than existing ones."

Idaho: Five Wives Vodka offensive to residents

Bottles of Ogden's Own Distillery Five Wives Vodka are stocked at a state liquor store in Salt Lake City, Tuesday May 29, 2012. (AP) ? Five Wives Vodka was named in bad taste and won't be stocked or special ordered at stores operated by the state of Idaho, regulators said.

The middle-shelf vodka is made by Ogden's Own Distillery in Utah, where the Mormon church is based. Its label carries the name and an image of five women, an apparent reference to polygamy, a practice abandoned by the church more than a century ago.

Idaho State Liquor Division administrator Jeff Anderson said the brand is offensive to Mormons who make up over a quarter of Idaho's population.

Regulators in Idaho notified Elite Spirits Distributor that the brand's concept is "offensive to a prominent segment of our population and will not be carried," according to a letter sent Thursday.

"The bottom line is, we represent everybody," Anderson added Tuesday. "It's masterful marketing on their part. But it doesn't play here."

Anderson said state stores already make hundreds of vodka brands available for sale and don't have room for another brand priced at around $20 a bottle.

Ogden's Own Distillery is trying to make the most of the rejection with a media campaign and sale of "Free the Five Wives" T-shirts.

It says the snub is unfair because a Utah beer named Polygamy Porter is available in Idaho. Anderson said Idaho doesn't decide what beer brands can be sold in grocery and convenience stores.

"We're a little dumbfounded by it all," said Steve Conlin, a partner and marketing chief for Ogden's Own Distillery. "The average person can look at our bottle and they don't find it offensive. It's certainly not obscene, which is what it would require for it to be banned."

Five Wives Vodka has been approved for sale in Utah, a state dominated by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's also available in Wyoming, another state that regulates liquor sales.

Nobody in Utah is raising a fuss over the brand, said Vickie Ashby, a spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Utah regulates all sales of hard liquor, wine and heavy beer, making the products available only at state-owned stores. Idaho and Wyoming control liquor sales with a mix of state-owned and privately-operated stores.

"We have a product that has sold nearly 1,000 cases in six months in Utah," Conlin said. "If the reaction is because of a religious concern, we think they are extremely misguided."

Consumer confidence plunges in May

CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the data on May's decline in consumer confidence at 64.9 versus 68.7 in April.

By msnbc.com news services

Americans' confidence in the economy in May had its biggest drop in eight months as consumers fretted about slow hiring, a big stock market drop and the global economy, says a private research group.

The Conference Board says its Consumer Confidence Index now stands at 64.9, down from a revised 68.7 in April. It was the biggest drop since October 2011.

Consumers? appraisal of present-day conditions deteriorated in May. Those claiming business conditions are "bad" increased to 34.3 percent from 33.2 percent, while those saying business conditions are "good" decreased to 13.6 percent from 15.5 percent.

"Consumers were less positive about current business and labor market conditions, and they were more pessimistic about the short-term outlook," said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board. "However, consumers were more upbeat about their income prospects, which should help sustain spending."

Economists were expecting a reading of 70, according to a FactSet poll of analysts. The current level is below February's 71.6, which is the highest level it's been in a year.

Consumer confidence is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. The measure is significantly below the 90 reading that indicates a healthy economy. But the current level is well above the 40 it hit last October.

But the latest reading is expected to be well above the 40 figure reached last October and the all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Delusional Paris Hilton Determined to Make New Album a Smash Hit

Paris Hilton might not want to quit her day job ... whatever that is.

Even with THG plugging it, her Oxygen reality show was canceled for abysmal ratings. You know it's bad when that happens. Now the former reality TV star decided to focus all her "career comeback" efforts on releasing a second album.

Breath? Probably shouldn't be held.

Paris Whitney Hilton

As we previously reported, Paris and Kim Kardashian are "cool" with each other ... on the surface. But she still can't believe her one-time BFF's level of fame.

After all, Paris wrote the book on getting railed on tape and turning it into nonstop celebrity gossip attention and millions of dollars. Kim just did her one better.

Or five, or 10 better. In any case, Kim is all the rage these days, while Paris' first album sold only 197,000 copies at the PEAK of her popularity in 2006.

Think the second one's going to do better?

"Paris has been working with Flo Rida, LMFAO, and David Guetta, and the album should be released this summer," says a source, anonymously of course.

"She has a lot riding on this project because her last reality show was canceled, and she needs to do something to re-invent herself. Paris is hoping to appeal to a broader fan base and would love to use the album as a platform for a possible project with MTV."

Whatever the odds of that are, bet against it.

16th-century Korean mummy provides clue to hepatitis B virus genetic code

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? The discovery of a mummified Korean child with relatively preserved organs enabled an Israeli-South Korean scientific team to conduct a genetic analysis on a liver biopsy which revealed a unique hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype C2 sequence common in Southeast Asia.

Additional analysis of the ancient HBV genomes may be used as a model to study the evolution of chronic hepatitis B and help understand the spread of the virus, possibly from Africa to East-Asia. It also may shed further light on the migratory pathway of hepatitis B in the Far East from China and Japan to Korea as well as to other regions in Asia and Australia where it is a major cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer.

The reconstruction of the ancient hepatitis B virus genetic code is the oldest full viral genome described in the scientific literature to date. It was reported in the May 21 edition of the scientific journal Hepathology by a research team from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment; the Hebrew University's Faculty of Medicine, the Hadassah Medical Center's Liver Unit; Dankook University and Seoul National University in South Korea.

Carbon 14 tests of the clothing of the mummy suggests that the boy lived around the 16th century during the Korean Joseon Dynasty. The viral DNA sequences recovered from the liver biopsy enabled the scientists to map the entire ancient hepatitis B viral genome.

Using modern-day molecular genetic techniques, the researchers compared the ancient DNA sequences with contemporary viral genomes disclosing distinct differences. The changes in the genetic code are believed to result from spontaneous mutations and possibly environmental pressures during the virus evolutionary process. Based on the observed mutations rates over time, the analysis suggests that the reconstructed mummy's hepatitis B virus DNA had its origin between 3,000 to 100,000 years ago.

The hepatitis B virus is transmitted through the contact with infected body fluids , i.e. from carrier mothers to their babies, through sexual contact and intravenous drug abuse. According to the World Health Organization, there are over 400 million carriers of the virus worldwide, predominantly in Africa, China and South Korea, where up to 15 percent of the population are cariers of the virus. In recent years, universal immunization of newborns against hepatitis B in Israel and in South Korea has lead to a massive decline in the incidence of infection.

The findings are the result of a collaborative effort between Dr. Gila Kahila Bar-Gal of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Koret School of Veterinary Medicine; Prof. Daniel Shouval of the Hadassah Medical Center's Liver Unit and Hebrew University; Dr. Myeung Ju Kim of Dankook University, Seok Ju Seon Memorial Museum; Dr. Dong Hoon Shin of Seoul National University, College of Medicine ; Prof Mark Spigelman of the Hebrew University's Dept. of Parasitology and Dr. Paul R. Grant of University College of London,Dept. of Virology.

Estate Planning ? Rules And Trustees |

In case you are correctly trying to place some assets into a trust (inter vivos) in your lifetime, then you will have been paying attention to the vital variations between wills and trusts. A belief created during your life shall be far safer with respect to its means to face up to challenges to how your assets are to be distributed during estate planning than a will. Making a trust is a brave factor to do, because it telegraphs, to a certain extent, what you will do with your property when you are still alive. This is what insulates it from attacks on your capacity, as a result of it?s unlikely, for example that, one of your relations is going to say you are insane or feeble and unduly influenced by another of your relations to your face and this makes the belief a far surer bet than a will, in some cases.

However, the belief additionally might engender arduous feels concerning the exclusion of a relative and those emotions will turn into identified to a person creating a trust while they are still alive. This is the benefit of a will ? if individuals do not prefer it, you?ll by no means know. The will maker is long gone when those who don?t love what they?ve accomplished contest the need and people who do prefer it try to defend it. Though, it needs to be noted that intelligent drafting ought to be capable of alleviate the necessity of either a contest or a defense. That?s the reason you need a clever estate planning legal professional to create your will somewhat than just a form. The lawyer that creates your will typically defends its contents, or in other words, their understanding of your wishes. The belief is a special story, as a result of your belief will probably be administered by someone (known as the trustee) for the aim of people who the belief advantages (the beneficiaries).

One of many paramount issues of forming a trust is deciding what powers the trustee has and what powers they don?t have relative to the belongings you may have placed in trust. Keep in mind that a trustee is already assumed to have a duty to profit the trust and that many states have laws concerning what a trustee can and can?t do, if the settlor (the creator of the trust) does not specify otherwise. However, once more, you don?t need to go away the financial destiny of your trust up to the state any greater than you want the state to decide who gets your assets. Your wills and trusts lawyer will be capable of provide you with a list of the normal powers of a trustee in your state and let you know what they mean. Many of the powers concern what type of property the trustee can spend money on on behalf of the trust. For instance, the trustee is typically prohibited from shopping for normal securities for the belief as a result of they?re considered too risky. But, in case you have chosen your trusted inventory dealer as your trustee and he or she has agreed, then this is perhaps exactly the restriction you don?t want. Consult along with your lawyer concerning the kind of belief you wish to create and what the foundations are in your state. Remember, that these guidelines are there to cowl the bases in case you do not make your own rules. Understanding the foundations which are there, and why, will provide you with a way of the kinds of guidelines that may be good and those that you would fairly not have. As well as, it is possible for you to to give the trustee extra freedom than the state rules would enable, or less, depending on how conservatively you want your assets to be managed.

Be ready to have a candid dialog with your attorney regarding what the foundations are and what you want to see happen. It is good to remember that your property planning attorney has seen many trusts and understands how they work. Typically restrictions that seem good at present is likely to be the very restrictions that cripple your trust in a vastly different economic environment. In some cases, a belief could span a number of many years and the trustee could change together with the local weather the trust was created in. When radical economic adjustments have occurred, a trust with larger flexibility will probably be beneficial. So you could have loads to consider as you enter the exciting world of forming a trust. Do not let rules be off-putting, they are there as guides and while you understand them you?ll have a larger understanding of what you need. Ask your estate planner to offer you details about the current rules and some basic recommendation about how to choose a trustee.

Cannes: live report

And so we close AFP's live report on the 65th Cannes film festival awards. To sum up:

-- The top prize, the prestigious Palme d'Or, went to "Amour", the wrenching tale of an elderly man caring for his dying wife, by Austrian director Michael Haneke. Haneke's duo of octogenarian French actors, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, bowled Cannes over in the tale of two retired music teachers whose adoring relationship is tested when she suffers a stroke and dementia.

-- Cannes' best actor award went to Danish heart-throb Mads Mikkelsen, who played a man falsely accused of molesting a child in the psychological thriller "The Hunt".

-- Two Romanian actresses, Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur, shared the best actress prize for their roles in Cristian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills", about a young nun and her friend who falls victim to deadly "exorcism".

1849 GMT: Also notable by their absence were a string of Hollywood stars, including Brad Pitt, who last year took home best actor for "The Tree of Life". This time he stars as a hitman in "Killing Them Softly", by Australian director Andrew Dominik, an anti-capitalist gangster movie which had been well received by the critics.

Matthew McConaughey, who had wowed the festival as an outlaw hero in the Huckleberry Finn-like tale "Mud", also missed out on best actor.

1838 GMT: Stars have filtered away now as the festival draws to a close. Among those disappointed will doubtless be French director Jacques Audiard and cast of "Rust and Bone". Starring Marion Cottilard as a whale trainer who lost her legs in a tragic accident, the film was widely seen as being in the running for either best director or actress.

1815 GMT: Haneke spoke to Canal Plus TV after the ceremony with his reaction to the win. "I'm delighted, it's amazing," he said.

Jean-Louis Trintignant said he had seen Haneke's film "Hidden" with Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil and despite not really watching films, was really impressed. Some time afterwards, Haneke asked him to work with him and he accepted. "He has changed the method of cinema," Trintignant said.

Haneke joins a select group of directors who have won the Palme d'Or twice. These include US director Francis Ford Coppola, Denmark's Bille August, Serbia's Emir Kusturica, Japan's Shohei Imamura and the Belgian brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne.

1810 GMT: On stage with Haneke were the stars of the film Jean-Louis Trinignant and Eammanuelle Riva, both in their eighties, who bowled critics over as a devoted husband caring for his dying wife.

1758 GMT: Starring French acting legend Jean-Louis Trintignant, the French-language film beat off 21 other movies to claim Cannes gold for Haneke, known for his intellectual, often emotionally gruelling arthouse pictures including "The Piano Teacher".

The cast gather on stage amid loud, rhythmic clapping of hands and a standing ovation.

1757 GMT: Austrian director Haneke, who won the Palme d'Or three years ago for "The White Ribbon", had been hotly tipped for the top prize.

His wrenching drama "Amour" is a tale of love in the face of mortality, through the lives of two elderly retired music teachers whose relationship is tested by dementia.

Haneke, with a shaggy white beard and grey hair, issues a gracious long list of thanks to many people including the actors in the film, calling it "their film."

Referring to his wife of 30 years, he 70-year-old director says: "This film is an illustration of the promise we made to each other, if either one of us finds ourselves in the situation that is described in the film."

1752 GMT: PALME D'OR GOES TO "AMOUR" by Michael Haneke, who gets a standing ovation.

1751 GMT: Next up, Audrey Tautou and Adrien Brody -- sporting a debonair moustache and midnight blue tuxedo -- to present the big one, the Palme d'Or...

1750 GMT: Leila Hatami ("A Separation") is up now wearing a stylish scarf in her hair and red flower at the waist, adding a splash of colour to white blouse and black skirt. She presents the Grand Prix -- the runner's up prize in the competition -- to "Reality", by Matteo Garrone Italian director.

The Italian tragicomedy features a jailed former mafia hitman as a man driven mad by a quest to become a reality TV star.

1746 GMT: Now the Best actress award, presented by US actor Alec Baldwin. He says: "There are days like this when it is hard to be an actor. You have to come to Cannes, you have to wear a tuxedo?" and present an award to an actress.

The prize goes to Cosmina Stratan and Cristina Flutur for their parts in "Beyond the Hills", by Romania's Cristian Mungiu. The film is inspired by the 2005 case of a young woman who died during an attempted exorcism at a remote monastery and is one of many weighty dramas in the competition.

1745 GMT: Gong Li, the Chinese-born actress from Singapore is on stage to present the best actor award. And it goes to... Mads Mikkelsen for his role in "The Hunt". He shares it with his wife and with the film's Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, best known as one of the founders of the Dogme 95 movement

Mikkelsen is best known to international audiences as Le Chiffre in 2006's the James Bond sequel "Casino Royale".

1739 GMT: Best director award, presented by Tim Roth, is won by Mexican director Carlos Reygadas for "Post Tenebras Lux", a family drama heralded for its surreal touches which drew comparisons with Luis Bunuel.

1735 GMT: The Best screenplay award goes to "Beyond the Hills", by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu. He won the 2007 Palme d'Or for his abortion drama "4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days". This time it's a true story about a deadly exorcism.

1735 GMT: Chairman of the jury veteran Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti is joined on stage by members of his jury including US director Alexander Payne, French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, British actor Ewan McGregor.

1734 GMT: "The Angel's Share" is a bittersweet comedy set in Glasgow, about four offenders sentenced to community service who decide that stealing a cask of priceless, rare whisky could be their ticket to a better life.

Loach makes a valiant effort speaking faltering French at the start of his acceptance speech. Says he would "like us to send our solidarity" to those facing austerity measures in the face of economic hardship.

1731 GMT: Next is the Jury Prize -- the third prize in the competition -- and it goes to "The Angel's Share", by veteran British director Ken Loach. It's his 11th film in the competition and the only British film in the competition.

1728 GMT: The Camera d'Or is presented by Spanish film director Carlos Saura and French actress Ludivine Sagnier. It goes to "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" directed by US director Benh Zeitlin, who receives the award to rapturous applause and seems briefly lost for words before accepting. He called it an "award for courage and faith".

1724 GMT: Kylie presents the Short Film Palme d'Or, to Turkey's L. Rezan Yesilbas for "Sessiz-Be Deng" (Silent).

1719 GMT: Kylie Minogue up now...

1717 GMT: "The Artist" star B?r?nice Bejo, mistress of ceremonies, arrives on stage and the awards begin. She makes a few pleasant opening comments, ending "nothing can stop cinema, and certainly not the rain".

1713 GMT: The cast of Claude Miller's "Therese Desqueyroux" arrive en masse, notably Gilles Lellouche, Audrey Tatou, and Ana?s Desmoutier. Miller's last film before he died, it was aptly the closing film of the festival.

Audrey Tautou's immaculate crimped hair and gold dress are protected from the rain by a huge umbrella as she heads inside the auditorium.

1706 GMT: Kylie Minogue is on the croisette. She features in a bit part as a suicidal singing air hostess in "Holy Motors", by French comeback director Leos Carax. If you think that sounds weird, you'd be right.

1659 GMT: Mads Mikkelsen soaked for the second time in a week, adds Cole. Mikkelsen is tipped as a possible for this year's best actor for his role as a man falsely accused of molesting a child in "The Hunt", a thriller by Denmark's Thomas Vinterberg.

1654 GMT: Crowd goes wild as last year's best actor winner Jean Dujardin ("The Artist") arrives on red carpet, tweets AFP's Deborah Cole#Cannes.

1650 GMT: With the award ceremony less than an hour away, there is no clear-cut winner for the top prize, the Palme d'Or, out of the 22 films in the mix.

Austrian director Michael Haneke looks like a strong contender though for his wrenching tale of love and mortality, "Amour".

16:40 GMT: Forget sun-drenched French Riviera glamour. It is bucketing it down in Cannes. Guests are arriving armed with umbrellas against a backdrop of storms and dark clouds. It's been raining for two hours, reports AFP's Laurence Coustal. The red carpet is littered with umbrellas, beautiful dresses adorned with plastic bags covering well-coiffed heads.

Welcome to AFP's live report on the final night of the Cannes film festival. We'll be bringing you all the glitz and glamour from the red carpet on the French Riviera and following the award ceremony to reveal who will take home the coveted Palme d'Or in this 65th anniversary year.

Fantastic Exercises That Can Lead To Amazing Weight Loss

Article Directory :: Health & Fitness Articles

No matter how you slice it, losing weight is much easier when you combine exercise with a smart eating plan. Sure, you can stay as passive as you want, but even if you eat the perfect diet, you can only get so fit. You will still have flabby muscles that don't burn many calories throughout the day. If you never exercise, you will slowly shrink in stature and will only be able to eat so many calories in a day.

But when you exercise on a regular basis, there's no limit to what you can eat, as you'll always be burning it off. But what exercises should you do? Luckily, you're reading this article, because you are about to find out the most important exercises for weight loss.

Perhaps the most popular, and maybe the most effective exercise for weight loss is running. If you show up at the start of any 10K or 5K race, you won't see too many people who are overweight. The great thing about running is that you can do it anywhere, any time. Just get a good pair of shoes, and hit the road. You'll be in shape in no time.

If running isn't your cup of tea, then try some other exercise that will get your heart rate going for twenty or thirty minutes. Brisk walking is a good one. There's also plenty of machines at the gym that are just as good as running, but don't have the high impact. If you're lucky, you can find a gym that will have a bunch of TV sets in front of the cardio equipment, so you don't get bored.

Lifting weights is also important. You don't have to try and look like the Incredible Hulk, but building just a little bit of muscle mass will send your metabolism through the roof. Just hit the weights a couple of times a week, and you'll be fine.

If you don't like the idea of pumping iron, then consider doing some body weight exercises. These are things like sit ups, push ups, and pull ups. Anything that uses your own body weight as the resistance. The benefit of these is that you'll never get really big, as you won't be increasing the weight like you would at the gym. You'll just be increasing the amount of reps that you'll be doing.

Swimming is a perfect exercise for the entire body. You get a cardiovascular workout, and you work virtually every muscle in your body. The only drawback is that you've got to find a swimming pool that's open when it's convenient for you.

Many people have found that doing martial arts is a great way to get your whole body in shape. Martial arts uses a lot of isometrics, which is flexing and relaxing the muscles without using any form of resistance. Take a look at Bruce Lee to see what you can do with martial arts.

Believe it or not, there are plenty of video games, specifically the Wii, that will help you lose weight. While these aren't nearly as active as the ones listed above, they are better than sitting on your couch watching "The Price Is Right."

No matter which exercise you choose, you'll find some kind of benefit. Just choose whichever one you feel most comfortable with, and stick to it. You'll be skinny in no time.

In order to lose weight, it helps to exercise. Many feel that the New Balance 1064 is the best shoe to help you exercise and get into great shape. Find out more when you visit the New Balance 1064 site today.

New Mexico Wildfire Smoke Triggers Health Alerts As Far As Albuquerque And Santa Fe

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Firefighters are battling a massive wildfire in southwestern New Mexico that has destroyed a dozen cabins and spread smoke across the state, prompting holiday weekend air-quality warnings.

The fire burned early Saturday through remote and rugged terrain around the Gila Wilderness and has grown to 85,000 acres or more than 130 square miles.

The heavy smoke apparently disoriented six hikers Friday, prompting the New Mexico National Guard to carry out a rescue.

Col. Michael Montoya said one of them had an injured knee and had to be taken to safety by ambulance. The others were able to walk to a secure area.

More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze that resulted from the merger earlier this week of two lightning-sparked fires. Fire officials say nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds.

The blaze has destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings, and the privately owned ghost town of Mogollon was placed under a voluntary evacuation order.

The strong winds pushed ash from the blaze 35 to 40 miles away, while smoke from the giant fire spread across the state and into Arizona. The haze blocked views of the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, and a smell of smoke permeated the air throughout northern New Mexico.

Health officials as far away as Albuquerque and Santa Fe issued alerts for the holiday weekend, advising people to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed.

They said the effects on most people would be minor but noted mild throat and eye irritation or allergy-like symptoms could be expected. Officials warned people with heart and lung conditions to be especially diligent in minimizing their exposure to the smoky air.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, officials said heavy air tankers and thousands of firefighters were on standby Friday as fire managers kept a close watch on high winds and hot temperatures at the start of Memorial Day weekend. Fire danger remains high in the southern Colorado foothills and the South Park area.

Two heavy air tankers have been taken to Grand Junction in western Colorado, where the fire danger is highest, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Steve Segin said.

"We've got the resources. We've got the firefighters," Segin said. "We're ready."

The National Weather Service said wind gusts could reach 70 mph Saturday in some western Colorado valleys, with sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph. Most of eastern Colorado also was under a high-wind watch, with sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 55 mph possible Saturday.

In Southern California, firefighters worked to corral a wildfire that has chewed through 3,100 acres of tinder-dry grass and light brush since it broke out Thursday afternoon east of Julian.

On Friday, the fire forced about 50 people to evacuate an RV park in San Diego County. It earlier prompted the evacuation of about 100 homes in the Shelter Valley area, but residents were allowed to return late Thursday.

The fire was 20 percent contained, said Nick Schuler, battalion chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. No injuries or damage to structures were reported.

In Arizona, residents of the historic mining town of Crown King were allowed to return home after being evacuated because of a wildfire about 85 miles north of Phoenix. The fire started May 13 and has burned more than 16,000 acres. It is 35 percent contained, fire officials said.

In Nevada, questions were being raised over fire crews' initial response to a backyard burn that rekindled two days later, destroying two homes in a rural community and scorching 7,500 acres.

A 911 recording obtained by The Associated Press showed a resident called Sunday to report that a neighbor's permitted burn in the Topaz Ranch Estates was out of control. Volunteer firefighters with the East Fork Fire Protection District arrived at the scene and then left, apparently without extinguishing the blaze.

Gusty winds rekindled the fire Tuesday, and it spread quickly through thick brush and dry grasses. Two homes and 17 outbuildings were destroyed.

District Fire Chief Tod Carlini did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Friday.

Old and New Neurons Trade Roles to Aid Memory

Brain cells help us recall the past by taking on new roles as they age

In this groundbreaking adventure into the worlds of psychopaths, the renowned psychologist Kevin Dutton argues that there is a fine line between a brilliant...

For decades researchers have known that our ability to remember everyday experiences depends on a slender belt of brain tissue called the hippocampus. Basic memory functions, such as forming new memories and recalling old ones, were thought to be performed along this belt by different sets of neurons. Now findings suggest that the same neurons in fact perform both these very different functions, changing from one role to another as they age.

The vast majority of these hippocampal neurons, called granule cells, develop when we are very young and remain in place throughout our lives. But about 5 percent develop in adulthood through the birth of new neurons, a process known as neurogenesis. Young granule cells help form new memories, but as they get older they switch roles to helping recall the past. Newer granule cells pick up the slack, taking on the role of helping to form new memories. Susumu Tonegawa of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his colleagues published the findings on March 30 in the journal Cell.

Tonegawa?s team tested the role of these adult-born cells by genetically engineering mice in which the old cells could be selectively turned off. They then put the mice through a series of mazes and fear-conditioning tests, which demonstrated that young granule cells are essential to forming separate memories of similar events, whereas old granule cells are essential to recalling past events based on small cues. This discovery suggests that memory impairments common in aging and in post-traumatic stress disorder may be connected to an imbalance of old and new cells. ?If you don?t have a normal amount of young cells, you may have a problem distinguishing between two events that would be seen as different by healthy people,? Tonegawa says. At the same time, the presence of too many old cells would make it easier to recall traumatic past experiences based on current cues.

Previous research has shown that both traumatic experiences and natural aging can lead to fewer new neurons being produced in the hippocampus. But a cause-and-effect relation between impaired neurogenesis and memory disorders has yet to be established. If such a connection is found, this research will have opened the door to a novel class of treatments aimed at stimulating neurogenesis. Already it is changing the way we think memory works.

'Leo Nunez' returns to US, will rejoin Marlins

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:24 p.m. ET May 25, 2012

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - Dominican relief pitcher Juan Carlos Oviedo says he has his U.S. visa, and will able to rejoin the Miami Marlins in August after serving a suspension from Major League Baseball.

Oviedo was caught playing under the fake name of Leo Nunez and spent the offseason in the Dominican Republic clearing up his immigration status. He said Friday that he had received a visa from the U.S. government and would be in South Florida on Monday.

His suspension will be for eight weeks, a person familiar with the case said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the suspension hasn't been announced.

Marlins reliever Edward Mujica, who spoke by phone with Oviedo, said his teammate is excited about rejoining the Marlins.

"He's happy, and I'm happy for him," Mujica said. "He had a bad secret and didn't say anything to anybody, and he's sad about that. Now it's good because everybody knows his real name. But it's going to be hard to call him J.C., you know?"

Oviedo, who turned professional in 2000, has said he used a fake name since he was young so he could say he was old enough to sign his first contract.

He played under the name Leo Nunez for seven major league seasons and had 36 saves and a 4.06 ERA in 68 games for the Marlins in 2011.

They acquired All-Star closer Heath Bell in the offseason, and Oviedo is expected to be given a setup role.

Going to the moon? Don't touch the artifacts

Don?t say you haven?t been warned. NASA put out an official document on Thursday specifying how close any future spacecraft and astronauts visiting the moon can come to the artifacts left there by all U.S. space missions, including the Apollo landing sites, robotic landing sites such as Surveyor's, and spacecraft impact sites.

These recommendations are not mandatory ? there?s obviously no way to enforce this yet. Instead, the document says the guidelines are "offered to inform lunar spacecraft mission planners interested in helping preserve and protect lunar historic artifacts and potential science opportunities for future missions."

For example, NASA recommends an artifact boundary extending 75 meters (246 feet) from the Apollo 11 lunar module descent stage, and an exclusion zone extending even farther (225 meters, or 738 feet) for the Apollo 17 site.

NASA isn?t expecting a rush of astro-looters to descend upon the moon, but with China discussing a moon landing, and with several Google Lunar X Prize teams hoping to send robotic landers, the space agency wants to make sure nothing from previous missions is disturbed.

"In the 50 years since the first lunar missions, the spaceflight community has not formally provided recommendations to the next generation of lunar explorers on how to preserve the original artifacts and protect ongoing science from the potentially damaging effects of nearby landers,? NASA said in an accompanying press release, saying that they recognize the steadily increasing technical capabilities of spacefaring commercial entities and nations throughout the world that may be on the verge of landing spacecraft on the surface of the Moon.

The document specifies how close another spacecraft can hover, fly over, hop or touch down near landing sites or spacecraft. NASA suggests a "descent/landing boundary" of 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) around lander sites such as the Apollo and Surveyor sites, and a boundary of 500 meters (0.3 miles) around impact sites such as the Ranger crash sites. Spacecraft should not cross that boundary during descent and landing, NASA said.

NASA?s decisions on proximity boundaries were made from recommendations from external experts from the historic, scientific and flight-planning communities and apply to US government artifacts on the lunar surface.

Hardware items aren't the only things included in the "don?t touch" areas: "U.S. human, human-robotic lunar presence, including footprints, rover tracks, etc., although not all anthropogenic indicators are protected as identified in the recommendations," the document says.

NASA says they released this document to open discussions with commercial and international space agencies, and seek any improvements to the recommendations.

Forecasters: 9 to 15 storms this hurricane season

MIAMI (AP) ? U.S. forecasters predicted Thursday that this year's Atlantic hurricane season would produce a normal number of about nine to 15 tropical storms.

As many as four to eight of those storms could strengthen into hurricanes, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's initial outlook for the six-month storm season that officially begins June 1. One to three of those could become major hurricanes with top winds of 111 mph or higher.

The weather phenomenon known as El Nino, which warms Pacific waters near the equator and increases wind shear over the Atlantic, may develop by the late summer or early fall and help suppress storm development, forecasters said.

This season got an early start when Tropical Storm Alberto formed Saturday off the coast of South Carolina. Alberto dissipated Tuesday over the Atlantic.

Forecasters name tropical storms when their top winds reach 39 mph; hurricanes have maximum winds of at least 74 mph. The next named storm will be named Beryl.

No major hurricane has made a U.S. landfall in the last six years, since Hurricane Wilma cut across South Florida in 2005. Federal officials used Thursday's prediction to remind coastal areas about the importance of emergency preparedness.

August will mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew's catastrophic landfall in South Florida as a Category 5 storm. The season that spawned Andrew started late and produced a total of just six named storms.

"Although this outlook suggests a less active season compared to recent years, the bottom line here is to prepare," said Robert Detrick, NOAA assistant administrator in the agency's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. "It takes just one major landfalling hurricane to make for a bad season."

The seasonal average is 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

The 2011 hurricane season, one of the busiest on record with 19 named storms, produced Irene, one of the costliest storms in U.S. history.

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30, and the peak period for hurricane activity runs from August through October.

Google completes takeover of Motorola Mobility

Google Tuesday finalized its $12.5 billion deal for Motorola Mobility, a key manufacturer of smartphones and other devices which puts the Internet giant in head-to-head competition with Apple.

"The acquisition will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing," the California-based Internet giant said in a statement.

"I'm happy to announce the deal has closed. Motorola is a great American tech company, with a track record of over 80 years of innovation," Google chief executive Larry Page said.

"It's a great time to be in the mobile business, and I'm confident that the team at Motorola will be creating the next generation of mobile devices that will improve lives for years to come."

The completion follows approval by Chinese, US and European regulators, amid concerns that Google would keep Android, a free operating system, out of the hands of competitors in the mobile device market.

Conditions from China's Ministry of Commerce included Google keeping its Android software for gadgets such as smartphones and tablet computers free and open for at least five years.

Regulators in the US and elsewhere have stressed that they will be watching to make sure that the Mountain View, California-based company does not use Motorola Mobility to obtain an unfair advantage in the market.

Google will acquire 17,000 patents with the purchase of Motorola Mobility and has been strengthening its patent portfolio as the fight for dominance in the booming smartphone and tablet market increasingly involves lawsuits claiming infringement of patented technology.

Apple and South Korea's Samsung, whose devices are powered by Google's Android software, are currently involved in lengthy and costly patent fights being waged on several continents.

The Android system snagged 51 percent of the US mobile phone operating system market in the three months ending in March, according to comScore, while Apple's operating system had 30.7 percent.

But in the global tablet market, Apple's iPad outmuscled its Android-powered rivals in early 2012, according to research firm IDC.

Some analysts have said Google may be content with the patent portfolio, and sell the handset and other hardware operations.

But Page's comments suggest Google will move headfirst into devices.

"The phones in our pockets have become supercomputers that are changing the way we live," Page said.

"It's now possible to do things we used to think were magic, or only possible on Star Trek--like get directions right from where we are standing; watch a video on YouTube; or take a picture and share the moment instantly with friends."

Independent analyst Jeff Kagan said it appears Google "has big plans in mobile, both with their Android on other makers handsets and with their own Google branded phone."

Google said it will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business unit, which will be a licensee of Android, the Google operating system for mobile devices.

"Android will remain open," the company said.

Heading the unit will be "long-time Googler" Dennis Woodside, who will take over from Sanjay Jha, who led the company through this acquisition.

Woodside, who has overseen integration planning for the acquisition, previously served as president of Google's Americas region.

"Motorola literally invented the entire mobile industry with the first-ever commercial cell phone in 1983," Woodside said.

"Thirty years later, mobile devices are at the center of the computing revolution. Our aim is simple: to focus Motorola Mobility's remarkable talent on fewer, bigger bets, and create wonderful devices that are used by people around the world."

Motorola Mobility was created in 2011 when US-based Motorola Inc. split the company into a mobile devices unit and a government and public safety division known as Motorola Solutions.
