Taming the Psychopath Within

Neuroscientist James Fallon shared the stage with clinical psychologist Kay Redfield Jamison and lawyer Elyn Saks, who specializes in law and psychiatry, at the World Science Festival program, Madness Redefined: Creativity, Intelligence and the Dark Side of the Mind, held at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College in New York City this June. Here, Fallon shares a bracingly honest account of his life with bi-polar disorder, OCD and panic attacks.

I?m a serotonin train wreck, and I love it. I don?t feel as if I suffer from a mental disorder, but am rather blessed by it. While this may appear to be a bit of denial, a bit of eccentric goofiness, which all may be true too, the crazy quilt of genetic gifts I received from my parents, and more the enlightened way they and my family treated me, provided a powerful fulcrum to succeed, and fully enjoy it all, in spite of sloshing in some funky dark groundwater along the way.

Most of the conditions and symptoms I displayed are familiar to any family. At two I began a lifetime of chronic asthma, full blown obsessive compulsive disorder starting around puberty, years of scrupulous hyper-religiosity and hints of endogenous depression. Then in my late teens two decades of recurrent panic attacks, about 850 in all, each promising certain death riding on a galloping heart beat and blood pressure spikes of 230/140+. This paralleled a lifetime of the ever popular smoking and alcohol abuse, obesity swings of 100 pounds and more twice a decade, 4 hour nights of sleep with apnea and heroic snoring, chronic hypomania embedded within a mild bipolar disorder, and the late life surprise, discovering a latent psychopath inside, not fully, but too close for friends and loved ones.

By ordinary measure, this lifetime of unrelenting psychiatric problems would seem horrifying. But not to me. My life always, from my first memory, seemed charmed and wonderful. The early conditions were always associated with a sense of imminent doom, as untreated asthma, OCD, and panic attacks would to a kid, but these were also associated with insights into myself, and a hint of what suffering people with real problems had. The allergic asthma and anaphylactic shock during my medical exam kept me out of Vietnam and may have saved my life. I was told later in life by my parents that when I was very young I told them I wanted to be a doctor because I knew what it must be for people to suffer. The chronic sleep deprivation was associated with fantastic visions, vivid dream sequences I wouldn?t give up for the world, they feel that exhilarating. In these states ideas would flood over me, and these ideas were both weird and true, and trained me to think out of the proverbial box, which definitely helped my scientific career, where I learned to receive, accept, and try out ideas that emerged from anywhere in my head, and at the most unexpected times and unusual circumstances.

In these states ideas would flood over me, and these ideas were both weird and true, and trained me to think out of the proverbial box, which definitely helped my scientific career, where I learned to receive, accept, and try out ideas that emerged from anywhere in my head, and at the most unexpected times and unusual circumstances.

The OCD would last only about six years, but that trained me to focus and be hyper vigilant, which also help train me to stay on tasks throughout life, and finish them with a fury. They also helped me develop a will to win, to a fault perhaps, but to also stop my heavy smoking and drinking and the will to lose 100 pounds when the spirit moved me. Keep the weight off? That?s another matter. The bipolar disorder did have its many moments of complete dread and darkness, the overwhelming fear of not existing, but 99 percent of the time the bipolar was all about hypomania, a most wonderful upbeat ?affliction? no hypomanic wants to treat.

Associated with all of these swings of mood and behavior came bursts of creativity and productivity in science and in the arts. A peculiarity of bipolar disorder, and to less an extent, fronto-temporal dementia, schizophrenia and psychopathy, is that a dysfunctional frontal lobe and imbalanced temporal lobe can release hidden creativity. What a gift!

Those positive feelings and traits and triumphs far exceed the negatives to me, and for that I am eternally grateful to the gods of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. But what about the most disturbing revelation of all that happened in my 60s, supposedly the decade of peak cognitive performance? To me the psychopathic traits are a curiosity, to people close to me, a sometimes curse. But they too feel that in general, the positive parts of me as a friend and family member, edge out the negatives, by a nose perhaps, but hey, life is a horse race, no? We take the thoroughbred we were born with, and ride it to victory, warts and all.

Help Wanted!

Is anyone familiar with or has heard of MobaMingle.com? Sadly the site was closed down a short time ago (I don't remember the date). You can say the site was a huge hit. It was a fun, forum-like based role play site, with unlimited avatar customization which overall made the site pretty cool. Users could write their own stories and publish them on the site. It wasn't just one big roleplay either. Their were different forums in different other forums, groups within other groups XD

Long story short, a lot of people were saddened with the cancelling of the site and I happen to be one those people (sad face.) So, it came to me the other night that I wanted to make a site similiar to MobaMingle. I just couldn't take being bored anymore. LOL

I'm posting this because I have NO IDEA where to start. But I know I need people. People, people, people. I and a friend of mine have agreed to be administrators of the site but we also need moderators, graphic artists, a person good with html codes, and overall a server to host the site from (free at the least LOL). I can do graphic design but I admit, I'm not all that great with drawing on a tablet hooked up to a computer.

So can anyone help us out?

Lance Armstrong Doping Charges: USADA Accuses 7-Time Tour De France Winner Of PED Use

AUSTIN, Texas -- The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has filed formal charges against Lance Armstrong, accusing the seven-time Tour de France winner of using performance-enhancing drugs throughout the best years of his career.

The agency notified Armstrong, former team manager Johan Bruyneel and several other Armstrong team associates of the charges in a letter on Thursday.

The charges came after a USADA review panel examined evidence in the case, which now goes to an arbitration panel to decide. If found guilty, Armstrong could be stripped of the Tour de France titles he won from 1999-2005. This year's Tour de France begins Saturday.

Armstrong maintains his innocence. Armstrong attorney Robert Luskin called the charges "wrong and baseless."

Also charged are team doctors Pedro Celaya Lezama and Luis Garcia del Moral; team trainer Pepe Marti, and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari. Because they are so closely linked, USADA rolled all of the charges into a single case.

Armstrong and the others "(have) been part of a doping conspiracy involving team officials, employees, doctors and elite cyclists," said the USADA letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The letter accuses Armstrong of using, possessing and trafficking banned substances including the blood-booster EPO, blood transfusions and steroids. The charges date back to 1998, after he had been declared cancer free but before his first Tour de France victory the following summer.

Bruyneel, who is currently the manager of the Radioshack-Nissan-Trek team recently announced he would skip this year's Tour because of the USADA investigation.

USADA says it has at least 10 former Armstrong teammates and associates who will testify against the cyclist, and blood samples from 2009 and 2010 that are "fully consistent" with blood doping.

Armstrong and the others charged have until July 9 to inform USADA if they plan to challenge the evidence before an arbitration panel.

The 40-year-old Armstrong retired from cycling last year, and in February a two-year federal investigation centering on alleged drug use by Armstrong and his teams closed with no charges being filed.

"It is the entirely predictable product of USADA's toxic obsession with Lance Armstrong and a process in which truth is not a priority," Luskin said. "There is not one shred of credible evidence to support USADA's charges and an unbroken record of more than 500 clean tests over more than a decade and a half to refute it."

The formal charges came after a unanimous recommendation from a three-person USADA review panel that looked at the evidence.

"All respondents will have the opportunity to exercise their right to a full public arbitration hearing, should they so choose, where all evidence would be presented, witness testimony would be given under oath," USADA said in a statement.

"USADA will continue to follow the established procedures that are compliant with federal law and were approved by athletes, the U.S. Olympic Committee, and all Olympic sports organizations."

The arbitration panel could meet by November, USADA said, but Luskin hinted Armstrong may file a federal lawsuit in an attempt to stop or delay the USADA investigation.

"Mr. Armstrong is exploring all his legal options," Luskin said.

Earlier in the day, Armstrong had gone on the attack against one of the review board members, Minneapolis attorney Clark Griffith, using his Twitter account to note that Griffith had earlier this year been charged in a misdemeanor case of indecent exposure.

"Wow. (at)usantidoping can pick em. Here's ... 1 of 3 Review Board members studying my case," Armstrong tweeted, linking to an online story about Griffith.

Griffith entered an Alford plea on June 13. Under the plea, Griffith did not admit doing anything wrong but acknowledged prosecutors have enough evidence for a jury to convict him. A 24-year-old student reported Griffith unzipped his pants in front of her on a St. Paul street.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 26. Griffith told the AP he's innocent and entered the plea to avoid a trial that would embarrass his family.

Griffith said Armstrong's tweet was "an effort to get away from the issues that will be dealt with by an arbitration panel. OK? By smearing me, that does nothing. I'm innocent of that."

USADA has not publicly released most of its evidence against Armstrong. Griffith would not discuss Armstrong's case in detail but said, "He's really scrambling .... I can't wait to hear what the arbitration panel thinks of the evidence."

(AP) ? A shallow avalanche on Alaska's Mount McKinley may not have killed four Japanese climbers, but the slide pushed them into a crevasse more than 100 feet deep, the National Park Service said Sunday.

Spokeswoman Kris Fister said Sunday that the search for the climbers was permanently suspended after a mountaineering ranger found the climbing rope in debris at the bottom of the crevasse.

"We believe this is their final resting place," Fister said.

Yoshiaki Kato, 64, Masako Suda, 50, Michiko Suzuki 56, and 63-year-old Tamao Suzuki, 63, are missing and presumed dead.

The avalanche early Wednesday morning also pushed Hitoshi Ogi, 69, into the crevasse. Ogi climbed 60 feet out of the crevasse and reached a base camp Thursday.

Ogi had been attached to the other members of the team by climbing rope as they descended in an avalanche-prone section of the West Buttress Route. The rope broke in the avalanche and fall.

The group was on a section known as Motorcycle Hill at about 11,800 feet, which has a 35-degee slope. Climbers who take a required briefing on the mountain are warned of the avalanche danger there.

"This is the first time there have been fatalities," Fister said.

The avalanche, likely caused by new snow falling on rock or hardened snow and ice, measured 200 feet wide and 800 feet top to bottom, Fisher said. It created a snow pile averaging only 3-4 feet deep.

A 10-person ground crew searched for the climbers Saturday. The patrol included a rescue dog and a handler. The crew probed the avalanche debris zone and found no sign of the missing climbers.

Park Service mountaineering ranger Tucker Chenoweth, however, found grim signs of the doomed climbing team in the crevasse below where Ogi had fallen.

He descended about 100 feet, and while probing through debris, found the other end of Ogi's rope. He continued to dig but found compacted ice and snow debris.

The danger of falling ice made it too dangerous to continue an attempt to recover bodies, Fister said.

All the climbers were members of the Japanese alpine club Miyagi Workers Alpine Federation.

Ogi suffered a minor hand injury, according to the Park Service. He was flown off the mountain Thursday.

Webb Simpson stays focused, claims U.S. Open

Webb Simpson, U.S. Open champion. (Getty Images)

A good rule for the U.S. Open: Keep your head while those around you are losing theirs. A better rule: Shoot low while others are shooting themselves in the foot.

Webb Simpson did both, erasing a couple early mistakes ? and a four-shot deficit ? to win what turned out to be a nail-biter of a U.S. Open.

Simpson bogeyed two of his first five holes and stood at +5, his hopes apparently vaporized. But then came three straight birdies, and four in five holes, and presto, he was right back in the mix. A fortunate par save on 18, from the exact same spot that Tiger Woods chunked a shot on Saturday, and Simpson found himself in the lead by a stroke and waiting for Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell to finish their final holes.

[Also: Tiger Woods has devoted, if disappointed, fans]

Both men made it interesting; McDowell birdied 17 and missed a 24-foot putt on 18. Furyk, who had held the lead since Friday afternoon, gave up a costly bogey on 16 and put his approach on 18 into the sand. But in the end, both men missed their opportunity, and Webb Simpson had the U.S. Open trophy drop into his hands.

There's always irony in golf, and Simpson embodies one such story: He was an Arnold Palmer scholar at Wake Forest, and one of Palmer's most famous defeats came right at Olympic in 1966. He stepped to the tenth tee leading by seven shots, yet fell apart and would lose to Billy Casper in a playoff.

There would be no such playoff for Simpson, who watched calmly in the clubhouse as the two U.S. Open champions tried to match him but fell short. And at just 26 years old, Simpson has many more opportunities to capitalize on his newfound success.

Artificial Satellite Kinds | Netflix Alternatives

A celestial human body orbiting an additional celestial entire body of greater dimension is a satellite. An synthetic satellite is a produced object or vehicle supposed to orbit the earth, the moon, or yet another celestial entire body. Considering that October fourth, 1957 humanity is able of placing man-made satellites in orbit around the earth. The Russians had been the very first with Sputnik a little satellite that orbited the earth for a few of months and transmitted beeps for 21 days.

The USA launched its very first satellite on January 31st, 1958. This satellite was named Explorer 1, and by means of the data transmitted again to earth by Explorer one, experts found out the van Allen radiation belts, zones in place about the earth, and the planets Jupiter and Saturn, containing large-electricity protons and electrons.

fifty several years in the past artificial satellites did not exist. Because Sputnik far more than 4800 satellites have been launched by governments and personal businesses about the globe. Satellites are utilised for satellite Tv of study course, but there are several a lot more reasons for satellites.

Varieties of Satellites

The Moon is a satellite of the earth the earth is a satellite of the sunlight. The very first is named a moon, the second a planet. Man produced (man-made) satellites orbit any celestial physique and are constantly called a satellite, whether they orbit the earth, the moon, the sun or any other celestial physique.

We use satellites for various functions and all satellites can be positioned in a single of the following groups:

Communications Satellites

Distribution of tv and audio signals, and telephone connections through satellite are done by Communications Satellites. These kinds of communications normally need to have a satellite in geostationary orbit. In 1964 the US Section of Defense introduced the very first satellite that was positioned in geostationary orbit. This satellite was named Syncom three.

These days geostationary satellites are used to give voice, audio and video clip communications like satellite Television by Dish Community Satellite.

Navigation Satellites

These satellites had been of massive support to transportation firms, specifically transportation more than water and by means of the air. The US GPS satellites are in Minimal Earth Orbit (LEO) and can establish situation with a precision of one cm (.four inch). Nonetheless, that very specific positioning is accessible for army reasons only. For commercial use the precision is significantly less correct.

Navigation satellites are also employed for distance measurements for instance in between structures.

Climate Satellites

Observing the earth is the job for climate satellites, and then specifically what transpires in the ambiance. Distinct sorts of cameras, like infrared and regular cameras are utilised to observe possibly the identical component of the earth, from a geostationary orbit, or much more carefully from roman policier orbits to get more in depth images. These low orbit weather satellites concentrate far more on the review of the ambiance than on the present weather conditions it self.

Navy Satellites

Very equivalent to weather conditions satellites, navy satellites are also used for observing the earth. Generally with greater resolution cameras and rather of regular communications equipment, they use encryption as well. Occasionally these sorts of satellites have really diverse kinds of orbits. For instance a quite elliptical orbit which provides the satellite as considerably away from the earth as the moon and as near to the earth that it shortly enters the environment, to get as near as attainable to the earth surface without falling back again to earth.

Probably a lot of much more tactics are utilized, but for apparent causes, these are unknown.

Scientific Satellites

Observing the earth for scientific reasons is also extremely good attainable with satellites. Generating maps with very low roman policier orbits satellites for instance, but also measuring the precise condition of the earth, geological analysis, and many others can all gain tremendously from scientific satellites.

But scientific satellites are not just employed for observing the earth. The investigation of place positive aspects also from scientific satellites. For instance the Hubble Satellite which actually is a enormous telescope that orbits the earth. Simply because the Hubble telescope isn?t going to have to ?see? by way of the ambiance it can generate a lot clearer and detailed photos than earth primarily based telescopes.

Stiff winds fuel Colo. wildfire; looting a concern

(AP) ? Crews in northern Colorado are facing powerful winds as they battle a blaze that has scorched about 86 square miles of mountainous forest land and destroyed at least 181 homes, the most in state history. Meanwhile, local authorities are focusing on another concern ? looting.

The destructiveness of the High Park Fire burning 15 miles west of Fort Collins surpassed the Fourmile Canyon wildfire, which destroyed 169 homes west of Boulder in September 2010.

More than 1,630 personnel are working on the Fort Collins-area fire, which was sparked by lightning and is 45 percent contained.

Julie Berney with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said firefighters can expect winds of 30 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph Sunday. Some rain moved through Saturday evening, but it wasn't enough to quell the fire.

"The problem is that when you have a fire like this, even if it rains it evaporates before it hits the ground," Berney said.

On Sunday afternoon, wind-whipped flames prompted fire managers to send 96 notices to residents, ordering the immediate evacuation of the Hewlett Gulch Subdivision in the Poudre Canyon area north of the fire. It was unclear how many homes were affected.

A red flag warning has been issued for the area until 8 p.m. Sunday, and temperatures could reach 90 degrees, the hottest day since the fire was reported June 9.

But incident commander Bill Hahnenberg said he was pleased with the firefighters' progress, while also acknowledging that high winds could be a test.

"A scenario could be we'll lose some line, and then we just go after it the next day and the next day," he said. "We're going to do everything we can to protect facilities, and we're prepared to do that."

As firefighters try to get the upper hand on the blaze, which has burned large swaths of private and U.S. Forest Service land, local authorities have dispatched roving patrols to combat looting.

Deputies arrested 30-year-old Michael Stillman Maher of Denver on Sunday on charges including theft and impersonating a firefighter. The sheriff's department said Maher was driving through the fire zone with phony firefighter credentials and a stolen government license plate.

His truck was later spotted near a bar in Laporte, and investigators say they found a firearm and stolen property in the vehicle.

"There's a handful out there that are taking advantage of others," said Sheriff Justin Smith, adding that "if somebody's sneaking around back there, we're going to find them."

Also in Colorado, a fire near Pagosa Springs in the southwestern part of the state has grown to 11,617 acres and is 30 percent contained. Hot, dry conditions Sunday are expected to fuel the fire, which was sparked by lightning May 13.

Across the West:

?New Mexico: A wildfire in southern New Mexico has destroyed 242 homes and businesses, and firefighters are working to increase containment and keep an eye out for possible lightning.

The 59-square-mile Little Bear Fire in Ruidoso is 60 percent contained. Dan Bastion, a spokesman for crews fighting the fire, says most of the fire is in the mop-up stage, but crews need to build more containment on the fire's active west side to deprive it of fuel.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack planned to travel to Albuquerque on Sunday to meet with officials leading the response to wildfires in the state.

? Arizona: Firefighters are focusing on protecting electrical transmission lines near a 3,100-acre blaze on the Tonto National Forest in northern Arizona. Officials say hot weather and steep slopes remain a concern, and firefighters are on the alert for thunderstorms and possible lightning strikes. The fire is 15 percent contained.

Romney: Obama denying middle class a 'fair shot'

(AP) ? Mitt Romney launched the next phase of his presidential campaign Friday, kicking off a six-state, small-town bus tour and telling middle-class Americans that President Barack Obama hasn't given them "a fair shot."

"If there has ever been a president who has failed to give the middle class of America a fair shot, it is Barack Obama," the likely Republican presidential nominee told hundreds of people standing in the sunshine outside a farmhouse plastered with his bus tour's slogan, "Every Town Counts."

It was new attack on Obama, Romney's Democratic foe, who has repeatedly argued that it's Democrats who offer a "fair shot" to Americans who "work hard and play by the rules."

The tour is Romney's first traditional campaign swing aimed at undecided voters in a series of battleground states that will decide the presidential election. Romney is hoping to win over people who might have voted four years ago for Obama's promise of hope and change but who are now disappointed in the president.

Still, Obama overshadowed the start of Romney's bus tour as his administration announced it will stop deporting hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. Romney ignored a reporter's question about the change in immigration policy as he shook hands with voters in New Hampshire.

In Friday's remarks, Romney told supporters they don't have to "settle for these years of disappointment and decline," instead offering a nostalgic portrait of a promising small-town America that he promised to revive.

Americans are "worried and anxious. They are tired of being tired. And they are tired of a detached and distant president who never seems to hear their voices," Romney said, as he stood on the bed of a farm's tractor trailer and read his speech from a teleprompter.

The speech, delivered from the farm where he announced his presidential bid last year, was the official kick-off of the six-state bus trek aimed at swaying undecided voters living "off the beaten path" outside of America's big cities. He invoked the names of famous American writers and entrepreneurs like Mark Twain, John Steinbeck and Thomas Edison while lamenting the decline of Rust Belt cities like Detroit, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

Obama spokeswoman Lis Smith called Romney's speech "angry and empty rhetoric" that offered "zero new solutions to grow the economy and strengthen the middle class."

Romney will spend the next five days visiting what advisers described as towns Obama forgot ? but in states the president won in 2008. From New Hampshire, the tour continues to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan. Still, Romney's campaign is visiting relatively friendly territory. In Pennsylvania, for example, two of the stops are in counties won by 2008 Republican nominee John McCain.

Romney's campaign has four buses plastered with a new logo ? one without his "conservative, businessman, leader" tag line from the primary. He will spend each day on the bus and fly to the next state on the tour in the evening. The former Massachusetts governor planned to roll through at least 14 small cities and towns over the five days of the tour.

It's a new mode for Romney, who kept a limited public schedule through late April, May and early June, preferring to spend his time raising money and holding a handful of public events each week. The bus tour will mix small, local venues with larger events and some untraditional campaign stops.

It will bring Romney back to the kind of retail politicking he hasn't engaged in since the early days of the Republican primary, when he campaigned in diners and coffee shops across Iowa and New Hampshire.

With that opportunity, however, comes risk. Romney sometimes ran into trouble in the more unpredictable environments. At one stop at a New Hampshire diner, for example, a gay veteran confronted him about his opposition to gay marriage.

Romney also has long faced questions about his ability to connect with the voters he meets in casual settings, and the bus tour is bound to test him again. Polls show voters personally like Obama more than they like Romney.

Blake Williams, a 26-year-old automation engineer from nearby Saco, Maine, suggested that Romney's long career in business sometimes makes it difficult for him to connect with the middle class. But he said that won't affect his vote.

"We need somebody to get the job done, not charm people," he said.

Nearly one year ago, Romney announced his White House campaign at the farm where he launched the bus tour. He won New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary in a landslide, though it took many more victories to triumph over his GOP rivals. Back at the farm Friday, Romney faced a new opponent in Obama, and a new challenge.

While he led Republican polls in New Hampshire by double digits, the state voted for Obama in 2008 and for Democrat John Kerry in 2004. Romney will have an uphill climb in New Hampshire this year, though his advisers see opportunity there.

Joining Romney on Friday were Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Both are considered potential vice presidential picks.

After the farm, Romney's bus rolled into Milford, N.H., for ice cream before continuing on to Pennsylvania.

That next leg of the tour ? Romney planned three stops Saturday in Pennsylvania's conservative midsection ? goes through the hard-hit Rust Belt, where structural changes in the economy have led to significant manufacturing job losses. He'll also stop in Ohio, Wisconsin and Iowa before heading to Michigan, where his father, George Romney, served as governor.

The Michigan stop will be Romney's first trip back home since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee, a standing his father tried but failed to win in 1968.

Six Signs your Dating Relationship is Unhealthy | donovanchristian ...

Who we date is extremely important. Few relationships have the same power to influence a person, shaping who they are and who they will become. There are always immediate and long-term consequences to who we date, so healthy dating relationships are vital.

Here are six signs your dating relationship might be?unhealthy:

1. Other people say it is.

The saying ?love is blind? is unfortunately true when it comes to people not being able to see that their own relationship is unhealthy. If people around you (friends, family, ministry leaders) are expressing concern? listen. And don?t think silence means everything is okay. If you?re not hearing anything, you need to ask. But, don?t just ask anyone. Ask people who have spiritual wisdom and a proven history of health in their own relationships.

2. You Disappeared.

People in unhealthy dating relationships often drop off the face of the planet. Their friends and family see so little of them, they consider making a missing persons report. If you find that you?re no longer associating with the same people you used to before the relationship, that should be of concern. Healthy couples have high levels of interaction with family and friends.

3. You?re Stuck (to each other.)

One of the best compliments I received while dating my wife is that we didn?t always have to be together. It?s not that we ignored each other, we just didn?t have to be attached at the hip. We had balance. We both?had other friends (male and female) and spent time with them. If you have trouble spending time with people other than your boyfriend/girlfriend, your relationship has health issues.

4. Drama.

While every relationship (even healthy ones) will have occasional disagreements, some couples have an endless supply. It seems like they?re stuck in a perpetual cycle of strife. An argument or a fight is always simmering. Healthy relationships should have significant periods of peace and calm between?occasional quarrels, not the other way around.

5. You?re Pretending.

The purpose of marriage is to bring two people into a permanent commitment to one another. Pretenders want the benefits or marriage without the commitment and that?s never healthy. It?s a shaky foundation for any relationship, even if it does eventually result in marriage. If the only thing that would change if you got married is a license, a ring and maybe a joint bank account, you have health issues. (Hebrews 13:4)

6. Spiritual Incompatibility.

I was surprised to hear a young Christian woman recently describe her boyfriend as being ?a nice guy, just not a Christian.? In terms of a dating relationship, that?s like saying ?I?m a vegetarian, but I love a good?steak.? There is a serious incompatibility issue when a follower of Jesus enters into a close-intimate relationship with someone who is not a follower of Jesus. They just don?t go together. (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

If any of these describe your own relationship, take whatever steps are necessary to correct them. Unhealthy dating issues never go away when people get more serious in the relationship, the ?unhealth? just gets more serious.

What other things have you seen that might be a sign that someone?s dating relationship is unhealthy?

Alessandra Zecchini: Easy silver beet baked pasta

Eating in: easy!

Brrrrr it is so cold now! I am baking almost every day, so most of my dishes seem to end up in the oven. This spent most of its life on the stove though: first I washed two big bunches of silver beet and cook them. I boiled the white stalks first, and then the green leaves. To do this I put the stalks in a big pot with a little water, and a pinch of salt, then after 5 min of boiling I added the leaves but no more water: the steam is enough to cook the leaves.?

Then I made a thick besciamelle: I melted 100 g salted butter, took the pan off the stove and quickly mixed in 100 g flour, then back on the stove and slowly added 1 l milk. Stirred well until thick and then added salt to taste, white pepper and freshly grated nutmeg.

In the meantime I cooked 500 g of pasta, I drained it and dressed it with a couple of tbsp of besciamelle, then placed it in a lasagna dish. I placed the silver beet stalks on top first, and then green leaves as a third layer. I covered everything with the remaining besciamelle. A super generous dusting of grated parmesan cheese on top, and straight into the oven until the crust was golden. This baked pasta cuts like a dream and it is super easy!

Eating out: am I unlucky?

I never do restaurant reviews on this blog, unless I am traveling and I like to show the food ... but I wouldn't call it a review. And if I don't really like a place I don't talk about it, full stop. But I was dying to write this :-). Last Saturday I went to the opera to see Rigoletto with a group of friends, so we meet before for a drink here. Fancy that, we were sitting at the same long table as Peter Gordon! (No I didn't take a photo or tried to chat with him, he was talking with some friends and I don't think that it is polite to barge in!). The bar was nice and buzzing, the staff was lovely, and there were a few tapas available that everybody said were very good. Unfortunately I was the unlucky one, I ordered crema catalana and it wasn't... right. But I will go back again happily... and maybe just stay away from the desserts :-).

A final note to show a bit of Autumn colours in West Auckland: Arantxa has joined the photography club at her school, and as a good Mum I think that she is super-talented!

Happy weekend!

BK hops on the bacon bandwagon ... for dessert

Burger King wants to lure customers this summer with a barbecue party ? and a bacon sundae.

The world's second biggest hamburger chain on Thursday is launching several pork, beef and chicken sandwiches as limited time offers. And for a sweet ending, the company is also offering a bacon sundae ? vanilla soft serve with fudge, caramel, bacon crumbles and a piece of bacon ? that started in Nashville, Tenn. earlier this year.

The salty-sweet dessert clocks in at 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.

The limited-time items are Burger King's the latest push to win back customers with a revived menu and reverse sliding market share, an effort that started soon after the company was taken private by the private equity firm 3G Capital in late 2010.

  1. More on Food trends

    1. Satisfy your craving

Look for more?exciting eats and foodie trends on the Bites blog

Earlier this year, Burger King launched its biggest-ever menu expansion including fruit smoothies, snack wraps and new salads. The items were intended to go after a broader audience of moms and families, a shift from the chain's previous strategy of courting young men with calorie bombs.

Core menu items, such as French fries and the Whopper, have also been tweaked as part of the company's efforts to improve food quality. Burger King is trying to underscore its own focus on ingredients with a new tag line, "Taste Is King," which replaces "Have It Your Way." A new ad has been celebrating summer barbecues to highlight the chain's emphasis on fire-grilling burgers. The new summer items will be featured in ads starting Thursday.

This month, 3G plans to take Burger King public on the New York Stock Exchange.

Wendy's is also revamping its menu to improve ingredients and recast itself as a higher-end burger chain. The makeovers by the hamburger giants come at a time when the traditional fast-food chains are seeing more competition from smaller players such as Five Guys Burgers and Smashburger that offer higher-quality food and alternatives such as Subway.

Burger King isn't the only fast-food chain that's trying to draw attention with unusual offerings. Taco Bell earlier this year introduced its tacos with Doritos shells and a "nacho burrito" that includes corn chips.

The rest of Burger King's summer menu includes:

  • Memphis Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich.
  • Carolina BBQ Whopper or Chicken Sandwich.
  • Texas BBQ Whopper or Chicken Sandwich.
  • Sweet potato fries.
  • Frozen Lemonade.

The items will be available until Sept. 3 or while supplies last.

Samsung Galaxy Note with T-Mobile-ready 3G swings by the FCC (update: demo units?)

Samsung Galaxy Note with TMobileready 3G swings by the FCC

A T-Mobile-capable version of the Samsung Galaxy Note has been floating around in pictures, but official evidence has been hard to come by. Imagine our surprise when it saunters by the FCC with few disguises: going under a hinted-at SGH-T879 codename, the giant smartphone has passed through the agency with the needed 1,700MHz HSPA band for T-Mobile 3G while also supporting 850MHz and 1,900MHz 3G in the same breath. The wireless support leaves the possibility that the unit we're seeing here is for 1,700MHz Canadian carriers like Mobilicity or Wind Mobile, but earlier photos of T-Mobile branding and a browser user agent profile allude to the American provider having at least toyed with the idea of a Galaxy Note on its network. Fans of supersized phones have reason to cheer, then, although we have doubts revolving mostly around the T879's absence on a leaked roadmap for mid-2012 and the lateness of the arrival. It might be hard for T-Mobile to steer customers to a 2011-era Samsung phone when the Galaxy S III is on the doorstep.

Update: Some more fuel for the fire: an inventory sheet reportedly leaked to TmoNews has more explicitly made the link between the T879 name and the Galaxy Note along with suggesting that demo units are in the queue. Although we wouldn't count on the rumored July 11th release being solid, there's enough to suggest T-Mobile is serious about getting its first phablet.

Samsung Galaxy Note with T-Mobile-ready 3G swings by the FCC (update: demo units?) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 12 Jun 2012 05:37:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Police surround home in hunt for Auburn suspect

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) ? Authorities searching for a man charged with fatally shooting three people near Auburn University converged Monday night on a house in Alabama's capital where they believe he may be hiding.

Police fired tear gas into the house to try to flush out someone who was inside, but were still in a "waiting game" after about three hours on the scene, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said. Dozens of police cruisers, trucks and vans surrounded the house.

Authorities received two 911 calls that someone who looked like suspect Desmonte Leonard was in or near the house, Strange told reporters. Officers have detected someone moving around, but haven't made contact with whoever's in there.

"It is a waiting game," Strange said. He said it would be difficult for police to go in, but they will if necessary: "Time is on our side."

Police spokeswoman Regina Duckett said it appears there is only one person in the home, and tear gas did not flush him out. Authorities were able to hear coughing and movement in the house after the tear gas was used.

"I'm actually surprised he's still in there," she said.

Authorities said Leonard was charged with three counts of capital murder in the shooting Saturday night during a pool party at University Heights apartments. He's also accused of wounding three others.

The dead included two former Auburn football players.

Earlier in the day police said they had arrested two men accused of hindering the search.

Auburn police said Jeremy S. Thomas, 18, of Montgomery was charged with hindering prosecution after he fled the scene of the shooting with Leonard. Records show Thomas was free on bond at the time of the Auburn shootings while awaiting a manslaughter trial set to begin June 18 in last year's shooting death of a teenager.

Montgomery police said Gabriel Thomas, 41, was also charged with hindering prosecution after having contact with Leonard after the shooting and providing false information to officers.

Police said it wasn't known whether Jeremy Thomas and Gabriel Thomas are related. Officers also were looking for a third man described as a person of interest in the case, but it wasn't clear why.

The dead included former Auburn players Edward Christian, who had to quit the team because of a lingering back injury; and Ladarious Phillips, who was transferring from Auburn to Jacksonville State University to play football. The other person killed was Demario Pitts, 20.

Of the three people who were wounded, current Auburn football player Eric Mack and Xavier Moss were both treated and released from a hospital. The third, John Robertson, remained in critical condition after being shot in the head.

A witness who identified himself as a friend of Pitts said he didn't know the man who pulled out a gun and began firing into the crowd following a dispute over a woman.

"I ain't never seen him a day of my life," said Turquorius Vines, 23, who wasn't injured in the melee.

Police arrested Leonard on two previous charges involving guns.

Court records show Montgomery police arrested Leonard in 2008 on a charge of carrying a pistol without a license, after stopping a suspected stolen vehicle and finding him inside. Documents available online didn't show whether the case was ever resolved, but Leonard was freed on bond within days.

Leonard was charged in 2009 with assault after a man was shot in the groin, but prosecutors dropped the case after the victim told authorities Leonard wasn't the shooter.

A Montgomery woman filed a paternity suit against Leonard on Friday that identified him as the father of a girl who turned 1 last month.

Another woman sued him in 2009 seeking unpaid child support for a girl who is now 4. A court ordered monthly payments of $305 by Leonard, who records show was working at a Walmart store at the time.

Auburn police said the shootings did not appear to have anything to do with some of the victims being former or current players on the football team, which won the national championship in 2010. The swimming pool at the apartment complex frequently is the site of parties.

The apartment complex was the scene of another shooting in April, when a man armed with an assault rifle allegedly opened fire on a police tactical team as officers carried out a search warrant. No one was hurt, but officer seized weapons, cash and a pound of marijuana.

Police identified the alleged shooter in the April gunfire as a 21-year-old man, who was charged with four counts of attempted murder and drug possession. Three other men were arrested on drug charges.
