Hair loss/thinning as a vegan?
To summarise my situation, I went vegan in early August last year. For the first few months I was the healthiest I have ever been. I felt great and started becoming more active, then made the decision to lose a bit of weight in October (something I had wanted to do for a long time, but struggled with when I was still being tempted by dairy chocolates and greasy chicken). I got a bit carried away to say the least and ended up at a BMI of 17 earlier this year. While I was at that low weight, my hair started thinning. I attributed it to me being underweight and not eating enough, but while I was getting back to a healthy weight and eating much more, including much more protein than I had been eating, the hair thinning has only slowed and not stopped. There is still substantial hair loss whenever I wash my hair (it has nothing to do with the products I use, I've been using the same products in my hair since August). It's not too noticeable yet but obviously I don't want to let my hair keep falling out, because at this rate it will be quite noticeable within the next few months or even weeks. Anyway, I am going to ask my doctor about it next time I see her, which will be in two or three weeks time, but for now, does anyone know what could be the problem here? I eat quite a bit of protein, sometimes over 60g in a day but usually somewhere between 30 and 50g. I take a women's daily multivitamin as well a vitamin d supplement prescribed by my doctor. I've tried Googling this but every article I read talks about protein when I really don't think that's my problem! (as stated, I get enough protein!) Could it be a sort of delayed effect from the emotional and physical stress I was going through in January/February with being underweight? And if so, if I keep eating healthily will the hair loss stop? Btw, I'm still vegan and plan to stay that way :)

Apparently hair loss is quite common among vegan females. I'll add the VeganHealth link to "Hair Loss". It has some interesting stuff. From the link: "The amino acid L-lysine plays a part in the absorption of iron and zinc. Among plant foods, L-lysine is only found in high amounts in legumes, and a vegan who doesn't eat many legumes could find themselves falling short on lysine. In some women, iron supplementation does not lead to an increase in iron stores. But in one study, adding L-lysine (at 1.5 - 2 g/day for 6 months) to iron supplementation in such women did increase iron stores and decreased hair loss by one half." Some of the minerals and vitamins associated with healthy hair include Vitamin B-12, Vitamin E, Panthonenic Acid, Niacin, Chlorophyll, and Biotin. These compounds work together to promote healthygrowth, improved thickness and increased strength. Research and consumer experience has shown pre-mature thinning and loss are often the symptom of lowered levels of vital nutrients. Hair vitamins are specifically formulated to provide daily nutritional needs for healthy growth, increased thickness, and improved strength. Hair basically consists of filaments of protein that grow from pores in the skin known as follicles. The key component of the fiber is a protein known as Keratin. Hair grows when keratin is deposited at the end of the hair inside the root, pushing it out further (like a growing plant), making hair strands longer. Vitamins, Amino Acidsand Mineralsfor Hair Growth The best vitamins for hair loss help control thinning, reduce breakage, and add volume. The side effects are increased shine and smoothness - and, uh, healthier nails and skin, too. The best way to treat such vitamin and mineral deficiencies is by simply putting them back in your body. While this may sound like a daunting task, thanks to the sheer complexity of the system that regulates these compounds, health companies have made things easy for you. Hair stops growing when there is no longer any build-up of keratin within the follicles. Certain factors sometimes cause the hair to come loose and fall from the follicle. Some of the factors that accelerate hair loss include a less than healthy lifestyle, over use of harsh hair styling products and constant exposure of the scalp to sunlight. Understanding what are the best vitamins for hair loss gets you one step closer towards reducing thinning and improving overall scalp and hair health. Ingredients Key to Improved Health One of the most common causes of hair loss is a lack of minerals, amino acids and vitamins. Vitamins and minerals are essential for the continued healthy growth, and adeficiencycan lead to poor health, loss, and even pre-mature graying. Many supplements (Hair Vitamins) arespecially formulatedwith active ingredients to help stop hair loss. Vitamins for Hair Loss, for example, often include B-group vitamins that are excellent at stopping shedding. Supplements that also include zinc and magnesium and essential amino acids vital for the formation of proteins, increasing shine, and improving strength - reducing breaking and split-ends.

Afghan killing suspect dogged by money, job strife

LAKE TAPPS, Wash. (AP) ? A diverging portrait of the Army sergeant accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers is emerging as records and interviews show a man appreciated by friends and family who won military commendations, yet one who faced professional disappointment, financial trouble and brushes with the law.

The deeper picture included details on how Robert Bales was bypassed for promotion, struggled to pay for his house and eyed a way out of his job at a Washington state military base months before he was accused of the horrific nighttime slaughter in two Afghanistan villages.

While Bales, 38, sat in an isolated cell at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.'s military prison Saturday, classmates and neighbors from suburban Cincinnati, Ohio, remembered him as a "happy-go-lucky" high school football player who took care of a special needs child and watched out for troublemakers in the neighborhood.

But court records and interviews show that the 10-year veteran ? with a string of commendations for good conduct after four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan ? had joined the Army after a Florida investment job went sour, had a Seattle-area home condemned, struggled to make payments on another and failed to get a promotion or a transfer a year ago.

His legal troubles included charges that he assaulted a girlfriend and, in a hit-and run accident, ran bleeding in military clothes into the woods, court records show. He told police he fell asleep at the wheel and paid a fine to get the charges dismissed, the records show.

Military officials say that after drinking on a southern Afghanistan base, Bales crept away on March 11 to two slumbering villages overnight, shooting his victims and setting many of them on fire. Nine of the 16 killed were children and 11 belonged to one family.

"This is some crazy stuff if it's true," Steve Berling, a high school classmate, said of the revelations about the father of two known as "Bobby" in his hometown of Norwood, Ohio.

Bales hasn't been charged yet in the shootings, which have endangered complicated relations between the U.S. and Afghanistan and threatened to upend U.S. policy over the decade-old war.

His former platoon leader said Saturday Bales was a model soldier inspired by 9/11 to serve, who saved lives in firefights on his second of three Iraq deployments.

"He's one of the best guys I ever worked with," said Army Capt. Chris Alexander, who led Bales on a 15-month deployment in Iraq.

"He is not some psychopath. He's an outstanding soldier who has given a lot for this country."

But pressing family troubles were hinted at by his wife, Kari, on multiple blogs posted with names like The Bales Family Adventures and BabyBales. ?A year ago, she wrote that Bales was hoping for a promotion or a transfer after nine years stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord outside Tacoma, Wash.

"We are hoping to have as much control as possible" over the future, Kari Bales wrote last March 25. "Who knows where we will end up. I just hope that we are able to rent our house so that we can keep it. I think we are both still in shock."

After Bales lost out on a promotion to E7 ? a first-class sergeant ? the family hoped to go to either Germany, Italy or Hawaii for an "adventure," she said. They hoped to move by last summer; instead the Army redeployed his unit ? the 2nd Infantry Division of the 3rd Stryker Brigade, named after armored Stryker vehicles ? to Afghanistan.

It would be Bales' fourth tour in a war zone. He joined the military two months after 9/11 and spent more than three years in Iraq during three separate assignments since 2003. His attorney said he was injured twice in Iraq ? once losing part of his foot ? but his 20 or so commendations do not include the Purple Heart, given to soldiers wounded in combat.

Alexander said Bales wasn't injured while he oversaw him during their deployment ? Bales' second in Iraq. He called Bales a "very solid" noncommissioned officer who didn't have more difficulty than his fellow soldiers with battlefield stress. Bales shot at a man aiming a rocket-propelled grenade at his platoon's vehicle in Mosul, Iraq, sending the grenade flying over the vehicle.

"There's no doubt he saved lives that day," Alexander said. The charges he killed civilians is "100 percent out of character for him," he said.

Bales always loved the military and war history, even as a teenager, said Berling, who played football with him in the early 1990s on a team that included Marc Edwards, a future NFL player and Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots.

"I remember him and the teacher just going back and forth on something like talking about the details of the Battle of Bunker Hill," he said. "He knew history, all the wars."

Bales exulted in the role once he finally achieved it. Plunged into battle in Iraq, he told an interviewer for a Fort Lewis base newspaper in 2009 that he and his comrades proved "the real difference between being an American as opposed to being a bad guy."

Bales joined the Army, Berling said, after studying business at Ohio State University ? he attended three years but didn't graduate ? and handled investments before the market downturn pushed him out of the business. Florida records?show that Bales was a director at an inactive company called Spartina Investments Inc. in Doral, Fla.; his brother, Mark Bales, and a Mark Edwards were also listed as directors.

"I guess he didn't like it when people lost money," Berling said.

He was struggling to keep payments on his own home in Lake Tapps, a rural reservoir community about 35 miles south of Seattle; his wife asked to put the house on the market three days before the shootings, real estate Philip Rodocker said.

"She told him she was behind in our payments," Rodocker told The New York Times. "She said he was on his fourth tour and it was getting kind of old and they needed to stabilize their finances."

The house was not officially put on the market until Monday; on Tuesday, Rodocker said, Bales' wife called and asked to take the house off the market, talking of a family emergency.

Bales and his wife bought the Lake Tapps home in 2005, according to records, for $280,000; it was listed this week at $229,000. Overflowing boxes were piled on the front porch, and a U.S. flag leaned against the siding.

The sale may have been a sign of financial troubles. Bales and his wife also own a home in Auburn, about 10 miles north, according to county records, but abandoned it about two years ago, homeowners' association president Bob Baggett said. Now signs posted on the front door and window by the city warn against occupying the house.

"It was ramshackled," Baggett said. "They were not dependable. When they left there were vehicles parts left on the front yard...we'd given up on the owners."

New details about the sergeant rippled across the country on Saturday.

"It's our Bobby. He was the local hero," said Michael Blevins, who grew up down the street from him in Norwood, Ohio. The youngest of five boys respected older residents, admonished troublemakers and loved children, even helping another boy in the area who had special needs.

In Washington state, court records showed a 2002 arrest for assault on a girlfriend. Bales pleaded not guilty and was required to undergo 20 hours of anger management counseling, after which the case was dismissed.

A separate hit-and-run charge was dismissed in Sumner, Wash.'s municipal court three years ago, according to records. It isn't clear from court documents what Bales hit; witnesses saw a man in a military-style uniform, with a shaved head and bleeding, running away.

When deputies found him in the woods, Bales told them he fell asleep at the wheel. He paid about $1,000 in fines and restitution and the case was dismissed in October 2009.

Dan Conway, a military attorney who represented one of four Lewis-McChord soldiers convicted in the deliberate killings of three Afghan civilians in 2010, said whether legal scrapes affect a soldier's career depends in part on whether they prompt the Army to issue administrative penalties. The punishments are typically recorded in official personnel files.

Over the past decade, Conway said, the military has sometimes been lax in administering such punishments. As a result, soldiers who might be bad apples sometimes remain in service longer than they otherwise might have.

"It's something you want to note," Conway said. "The best predictor of future violence is past violence."

Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne of Seattle, said he didn't know if his client had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder at the time of the shootings, but said it could be an issue at trial if experts believe it's relevant.

He also said Friday he didn't know if his client had been drinking the night of the massacre.

Browne didn't return telephone calls on Saturday. His legal team has said Browne will be meeting with Bales at Fort Leavenworth next week.

Easy Guide To Real Estate Financing | Asha Kiran

Besides the fact that it?s probably the average person?s largest financial transaction, buying or selling a home is one of those areas where mistrust and misconceptions are sure to be present. You can begin your real estate financing education by asking friends, family, co-workers, real estate agents, real estate brokers, mortgage brokers and real estate professionals for help, search online for local lenders and get current interest rate quotes. Now before you apply for any real estate financing, if you have a lot of bad credit because of consumer debt like credit cards or personal loans, you?ll want to try to eliminate or reduce this debt since it may affect your ability to qualify for a commercial or home mortgage and make the estimated monthly payment.

Keep in mind when you?re getting financing or refinancing that most people move or refinance within seven years. An adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) means that the interest rate changes over the life of the loan, according to the terms that are specified ahead of time. If you?re working with a local builder within a sub-division or housing development and just making carpeting, lighting and appliance selections for a brand new home, you?ll probably be able to get a standard mortgage loan. But if you?re hiring contractors, electricians, plumbers, and painters, you?ll probably need a construction loan, which provides funds to pay the subcontractors as the work progresses.

Twenty-year fixed-rate mortgages allow you to make a consistent higher monthly payment throughout all of the 20 years you have the mortgage. The shorter term means you pay the loan off quicker and therefore pay less interest and build your equity faster than with a 30-year loan. The disadvantages of a fixed-rate mortgage include a possibly higher cost; these loans are usually priced higher than an adjustable-rate mortgage.

Your property taxes may be deductible so make sure to consult with your CPA or other tax advisor for the current tax information. Insiders know that the advertised mortgage rates are not always what you?ll get from the lender; it could be market fluctuations, economic news, any other of a dozen reasons, but interest rates can change throughout the day. If you?re having a problem getting a loan or home mortgage you might consider a lease-option on a property; a lease-option on the real property will allow you to set a good purchase price now, then apply a portion of the rent each month toward your down payment, building your equity in the process.

Work diligently with your mortgage broker or lender to develop an individual loan or mortgage program based on your credit worthiness. 15-year mortgages are an ideal option if you can handle the higher payments and if you?d like to have the loan paid off in a shorter period of time, for example, if you have plans to retire. There are plenty of options that are ideal for those people who have a few bad credit indications on their credit report.

The interest rate for an adjustable rate mortgage may be adjusted up or down at predetermined times which will make the monthly payment increase or decrease. If rates in the current market are high, you?ll probably get a better price with an adjustable-rate loan. Interest rates can go up if a rosy picture is painted indicating the economy is flourishing, for example more jobs being available; this can lead to inflation which will send the rates up.

If you?re a first-time home-buyer it?s possible that you may qualify for a lower down payment or a lower interest rate. You might want to check with mortgage brokers, online mortgage companies, your county housing department or your employer to see if they know of any programs available. A fixed-rate mortgage means the interest rate and principal payments remain the same for life of the loan but the taxes will probably change.

Make sure to get lots of advice about real estate financing, mortgages, interest rates, mortgage rates, mortgage refinance, bad credit mortgages, etc., and think about what makes sense to you. Thinking positive about real estate financing is important and so is being realistic. It is always good to know the truth about advertised current mortgage rates when you need real estate financing.

Moo-ving on Up! | SuperWeed

Big news, folks. Dunno why it?s taken me so long to announce this, but I am moving back to the sanctuary, where I?ll be living in a 1973 Airstream trailer, sharing my front yard with cows and chickens in the part of the mountainous sanctuary property we call ?up the hill.?

My new home

As regular SuperWeed readers know, I co-founded VINE Sanctuary (originally Eastern Shore Sanctuary) with Miriam Jones?in rural Maryland back in 2000. We both lived on site for the first several years. Then I managed operations on site while Miriam lived elsewhere (visiting frequently) for a couple of years. That experience?solo sanctuary work in rural isolation?really wore me out, so I?ve taken a break from direct animal care for a couple of years while Miriam has more-than-ably not only managed but significantly expanded the sanctuary following its relocation to rural Vermont. (She?ll still be running the show. I?ll just be pitching in with sanctuary chores while getting back to the steady schedule of writing and speaking that I used to maintain.)

Speaking of writing, I?m just now finishing what ought to be the penultimate round of revisions on the book about the sanctuary?s first decade (and so much more?it?s about birds and people, race and place, and the ecology of violence). I started keeping notes for that book shortly after we took in the first chicken, becuase it was already clear to me that other people both wanted and needed to hear the stories I was living and observing out in the chicken yards. I had a go at writing the book in 2005, but that draft was a disaster, partly because I was still in the midst of of its narrative and partly because I didn?t yet have the skills I needed to tell the tale adequately. So, I wrote Aftershock and then set about developing my creative non-fiction skills while continuing to live the story. The next big push to write the book started in 2009, as the sanctuary?s decade on the Delmarva came to a close, providing a natural endpoint for the narrative. Three years and heaven-knows-how-many rebuilds, rewrites, and remixes later, it?s really ready. Next step: Pitching to publishers, so wish me luck on that.

I?m excited about that and about the move, but I also have mixed feelings. While it will be very good for me to get back to the sanctuary and to pick up some of the work set aside whilst making my living by teaching, I?m going to miss teaching at MCTC and Metrostate here in the Twin Cities more than I can say. And there are people (and places) I?ll miss too. So, don?t be surprised to see some ?what I?ll miss about Minneapolis? posts in the next couple of months. But do feel free to cheer me on as I prepare to segue to the next stage in my life.

Tips To Maintaining A Successful Online Business | Radiology ...

When internet marketing was fairly new, you had the advantage when it came to earning profits if you had a better understanding of how things worked on the web. Online marketers who blazed the trail in using autoresponders and Google Adwords were in a good position to be successful financially since they had few competitors. The world of internet marketing has changed a lot since then and it is more important than ever to build positive relationships with new and existing customers. This article will go over various aspects of relationship marketing and the methods you can utilize to build your business. I also tend to believe that how to identify asbestos in house can help.

More details on relationship building explained

While email marketing is no longer the only method of marketing to your potential customers, it remains a vital aspect of internet business building. List building is not focused on aggressively growing your subscriber list anymore. The truth is, your list members will be on more lists than just yours, and so your main goal is to get them to keenly open and read your emails. There?s no question that email open rates have slipped in recent years, so you need to position yourself in such a way that your messages are seen as a priority to those on your list. It is actually a fact in life that the more you give, the more you can anticipate to get back. If you give your subscribers useful free information, they?re going to be more likely to purchase something when you recommend it to them.

So if we assume the continued importance of email marketing, we need to also acknowledge that social media is transforming the face of relationship marketing. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are today vital aspects of the lives of many individuals and the subjects they discuss can make or break a web business. Online marketers can benefit from being active on these websites if they engage positively with people. People are more inclined to look at your website or join your mailing list if they have a positive experience with you on these sites. That is the objective since sales can then be made from your site or through your e-mail marketing. chains of infections seems to be an interesting topic too.

If you opt to study these social sites, you can expect to easily find a devoted group of people who will follow you because of how you build a relationship with them. There are many internet marketers who have experienced good results with these sites and you can copy them in your own business. Just like any marketing online, if you learn from individuals who are already successful in an area, you can avoid a number of the mistakes that can be hard to repair.

Relationship marketing on the web is more important than ever right now and the qualities of honesty, trustworthiness and giving value can bring about your success online. I generally also research bus driving job.

Taliban break contacts, Karzai orders US out of villages

The Taliban broke off contacts over peace talks with Washington on Thursday and the Afghan president demanded US troops leave village outposts, just days after an American soldier massacred 16 villagers.

Hamid Karzai also called for a transition of the nation's security from NATO control to the Afghan government in 2013 rather than the previous deadline of 2014, after meeting visiting US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta.

That plan had been floated by Panetta ahead of a NATO meeting in Brussels last month, but the US-led coalition insists that it will only withdraw its combat troops by the end of 2014.

The announcements from the Islamist militia fighting US troops for 10 years and by Karzai, Washington's key ally in Kabul, came hard on the heels of the shooting spree by a US soldier, who has been detained and flown out of the country.

The fallout overshadowed Panetta's two-day visit to Afghanistan, which was planned ahead of the shooting and aimed at calming relations already hurt by last month's burning of Korans at a US base.

The Taliban made no mention of the killings as it announced the suspension of contacts with US officials in Qatar over a prisoner swap -- talks that had built up hopes of a political solution before US troops leave.

"It was due to their alternating and ever-changing position that the Islamic Emirate was compelled to suspend all dialogue with the Americans," the Taliban said on their website.

But the White House denied it had changed the terms of the reconciliation dialogue.

"The terms have been as I've stated them on many occasions," said White House spokesman Jay Carney, citing a need for the Taliban to lay down its arms, renounce Al-Qaeda and to abide by the Afghan constitution.

"We broadly support a process here that is essential to the long-term resolution to the conflict in Afghanistan," he said.

Earlier, Karzai's spokesman Aimal Faizi quoted the president as telling Panetta: "We're ready to take over all security responsibilities now," adding: "We'd prefer that the process be completed in 2013, not 2014."

Karzai then told Panetta that US-led international forces should "be withdrawn from villages and relocated in their bases", his office said in a statement, without specifying a timeline.

US defence officials sought to play down Karzai's calls on the outposts and said Kabul had not requested any change in an agreed timetable for a gradual troop drawdown.

A US official accompanying Panetta, who arrived in Abu Dhabi after his visit to Afghanistan, told reporters on condition of anonymity that Kabul had agreed with NATO on a schedule for security transition through 2014 and that had not changed.

Panetta's spokesman George Little said the Pentagon chief and Karzai had a "very positive" meeting and that the "issue of villages" came up but in accordance with previously agreed plans.

NATO meanwhile vowed to stick to its plan to finish handing Afghans control of security nationwide by the end of 2014.

Panetta told reporters after his Karzai talks that he was "confident" both sides could work out a treaty allowing a US military presence in the country beyond 2014.

The defence chief said he was optimistic that both sides would reach an agreement on controversial night raids -- a major issue blocking the treaty -- ahead of a NATO summit in Chicago in May.

Karzai objects to the raids on the grounds that they violate the sanctity of Afghan families in their own homes and that they are responsible for many civilian deaths -- a claim the US disputes.

The treaty being negotiated is expected to cover Afghan-US relations beyond 2014, with the US keen to maintain a foothold in a country neighbouring Iran and to help prevent it from once again becoming a haven for Al-Qaeda.

Analysts fear Sunday's shootings could complicate talks on a possible long-term US troop presence, as the government has so far refused to grant them legal immunity -- the same issue that scuppered a US strategic pact with Iraq.

Panetta said he promised Karzai that the gunman would be brought to justice and that the Pentagon would look at what circumstances may have caused the incident -- including the possible effect of combat stress.

But his visit was also overshadowed by an unprecedented security breach during his arrival in Afghanistan Wednesday when an Afghan interpreter tried to ram a truck into US Marines waiting to greet the Pentagon chief at Camp Bastion.

Panetta downplayed the attack but the incident is likely to heighten concerns about a surge in attacks on Western troops carried out by the Afghan allies they are training to take over responsibility for security.

Spring Arrives in Manhattan with 70-Degree Weather

By Della Hasselle and Julie Shapiro

DNAinfo Staff

MANHATTAN ??Spring is finally here ??at least for the day.

Temperatures soared up to 70 degrees Thursday as New Yorkers headed outdoors to bask in the sun and mild weather.

"Feels like spring!!" user rawwr24 wrote on Twitter.

Forecasters expected the balmy weather to last until the end of the day, though the sky will cloud over and a brisk wind will blow through, with gusts of up to 54 miles per hour, according to AccuWeather.com.

The brief hiatus will end when rain showers arrive overnight, and temperatures are expected to fall to 44 degrees Thursday night.

The weather will cool off over the next few days, with a predicted high of 52 degrees and clouds on Friday, followed by a sunny weekend with a high of 45 degrees Saturday and 55 degrees Sunday.

The warm snap prompted New Yorkers to peel off their extra winter layers and soak up the sun.

"It's gorgeous and I want it to stay forever," said Zoe Sloan-Weiss, 20, a waitress who lives on the Upper East Side. She was wearing short blue shorts and a black leather jacket.

A pair of construction workers at Seventh Avenue and 52nd Street said they were going to mark the warm weather with a night on the town.

Marc Piazza, 23, of Staten Island, said "I'll probably go out for a night in the city."

His partner Chris Criswell, 25, from Long Island said his plans tended to a sportier pastime.

"It's great, I love it. it's handball weather," Criswell said.
