New MacBook Air uses screaming fast PCIe SSD

New MacBook Air uses screaming fast PCIe SSD

The new Mac Pro isn't the only new Mac model with PCIe-based Solid State Drive storage. The new MacBook Air, which began shipping this week as soon as it was introduced on stage at WWDC, also uses the technology, according to Ben Lovejoy at 9to5Mac.

Previous MacBook Air models - and all other Macs - have used Serial ATA (SATA) for their main storage. The new MacBook Air is the first shipping Mac model to use PCIe as its primary storage interface instead.

SATA 3.0 transfer speeds top out at 600 megabytes per second, but MacBidoulle benchmarked write speeds of more than 668 MB/s, with read speeds of more than 729 MB/s. And even with that, the PCIe 2.0 2x interface that the MacBook Air uses isn't the bottleneck - it can work at up to 1 gigabyte per second downstream and upstream. As faster SSDs become available, you can expect to see even greater performance.

If you have a Mac Pro (not the shiny and new one, the old and busted big box), you can drop in a PCIe SSD card from OWC and others.

Impressive performance for Apple's lightest weight laptop, and an early indication of what we can expect down the road as more Mac models adopt this new technology.

GoPro Software Update Hands-On: Easier Sharing, Awesomer Videos

GoPro, the Q-Tips of action cameras, recognized a problem. People are shooting tons of footage with their cameras, but then letting it languish away on a dusty old hard drive, unseen and unedited. The California company is hoping to help correct that with a new mobile apps and desktop editing software.

Watch a fighter vomit during his post-fight interview

So, you've made it through a three-round fight. It was described as "grueling," but you still got the decision win. Now, you get your chance to practice what it will be like when Joe Rogan comes into the cage after a UFC fight. It's time for the post-fight interview. Sure, your stomach is rumbling and you're not feeling great, but you just made it through a fight. You can make it through an interview, right?

Poor Cliff Thompson. He's 2-0, won his split decision over Doug Usher, but will still be remembered as the guy who puked before he could say a word in his post-fight interview. At the same time, there are plenty of fighters who are fighting in anonymity. Even if he is known as the Fightin' Puker, he will at least be known.

Thanks, Awful Announcing.

Talk Mobile 2013: The State of Mobile Gaming Survey

Talk Mobile 2013: The State of Mobile Gaming Survey

We're fans of numbers and quantifiable data here at Mobile Nations, and so following after the first week of Talk Mobile 2013, we're turning to our good friend the survey to help compile some data. We looked at mobile gaming and consoles, the dark underbelly of mobile gaming, multiplayer mobile gaming, why our current games aren't better, and what the future of mobile gaming might look like. And now it's time to put some numbers behind all that, thus the survey.

Before you head off for the survey, however, we wanted to tell you that later this week we will be posting a Talk Mobile 2013 Week 1 wrap-up podcast, as well as highlighting the best comments from the week - and recognizing the very best among those. But back to the survey - you'll find that here. And notice that putting in your email address while you complete the survey enters you for a chance to win a $100 gift card to Best Buy. Is it a blatant incentive? Perhaps, but at least it's not an in-app purchase beckoning for you to hit the buy button to make this level that much easier.

Hobbits and elves drawing tourists to New Zealand

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Hobbits, elves and dragons appear to be luring tourists to New Zealand as fans await their first glimpse of the second movie in "The Hobbit" trilogy.

Figures released this month by government agency Tourism New Zealand show that international vacations to New Zealand rose 10 percent from January through April when compared to the same period last year. The agency said a survey indicated that 8.5 percent of visitors cited "The Hobbit" as one reason for coming and that 13 percent took part in some kind of hobbit-themed tourism like visiting a film set.

Warner Bros. announced Monday it will release the first teaser-trailer of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" at 1 p.m. EDT Tuesday. The second film will premiere Dec. 13 in Los Angeles.

The trilogy is directed by New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson and shot in his home country. The opener "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," was released December 2012. It received mixed reviews but proved extraordinarily popular with audiences, earning a little over $1 billion at the box office.

In an email, Jackson's spokesman Matt Dravitzki said fans can expect "a surprise or two" in this week's trailer, "but I can't say anything more than that!"

A little over 500,000 tourists visited New Zealand for vacations in the first four months of the year. About the same number again visited for other reasons, such as for work or to visit relatives.

Tourism New Zealand has been running a "100% Middle-earth" marketing campaign that seeks leverage from the movies.

"The Hobbit" is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novel of the same name and traces the adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he attempts to help a group of dwarves regain their wealth and stature from the dragon Smaug. "The Hobbit" is the prequel to Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings."
