Songza Raised $3.8M According To SEC Filing, Amazon Still In The Frame As An Investor

2371v2-max-250x250Songza, a free streaming music service that has expert-made playlists and runs on the web and various touch screen platforms, raised $3.8 million according to a SEC filing. While Amazon has long been an "unconfirmed" investor listed on AngelList, it parlayed its investment in the earlier Aime St vehicle into Songza. In late 2011 the startup closed what was reportedly a 'seven-figure' round of financing led by investors including Deep Fork Capital as well as an ?undisclosed strategic investor?. Also participating in the round was Geoff Judge, co-founder of 24/7 Real Media.

Planning begins for 2014 Southern Alberta Summer Games

Toni Lucas, Pincher Creek Voice

To host an event as large and dynamic as the Southern?Alberta?Southern Games 2014 you have to plan ahead. ? Recreation Manager Diane Burt-Stuckey is asking that all the sports involved look critically at their venues and equipment to help plan if upgrades or replacements are required before Pincher Creek hosts the event.

A planning meeting on April 8 at Town hall for the games had nine people in attendance bringing their experience to the table. ?Some of the questions that came out of the meeting included:
Will there be ribbons or medals awarded to the winners? Will there be a games logo design contest? Who pays for the cost of new equipment? ?When ?to book referees and umpires?

There was a great deal of excitement because Jesse Newman of Rose Creek Ranch has stepped up to chair archery, with plans for a 3D archery event.

Volunteers are needed from every aspect from sports chairs to running individual?concessions. ?If you would like to become involved call the Town of Pincher Creek Recreation Office at 403-627-4322 or email rec@pinchercreek.ca

Andy Pettitte has back spasms, start pushed back

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees pushed back Andy Pettitte's next scheduled start a few days because the left-hander is experiencing back spasms.

The Yankees said Phil Hughes will start Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles and Hiroki Kuroda will move back a day to get the ball in Pettitte's place Sunday. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Pettitte should be ready Tuesday or Wednesday.

"It's frustrating," Pettitte said Friday before the Yankees played the Baltimore Orioles. "I had seven weeks of spring training, not one problem. It is a worry for me because I want to be healthy and I want to make my starts, but I also know that it's also a muscle spasm and if it goes away I'm going to be fine to pitch. I'm glad it's not like that we are in a bind as far as needing a starter to get out there and throw Sunday night."

New York has flexibility in its rotation because its previous two games were postponed by rain. Hughes was set to start Thursday and he was going to be skipped in order to keep Kuroda and Pettitte on target.

The 40-year-old Pettitte felt a spasm in the middle of his back during his start Tuesday against Cleveland. Still, he pitched seven impressive innings and improved to 2-0 this season.

"Hopefully it's just a one-time event," Girardi said.

Pettitte then felt "great" Wednesday and went ahead with his normal bullpen session and workout Thursday in Cleveland with no issues. His lower back seized up when he tried getting up from his couch later that evening.

"I would love to just go out there and try to pitch and I'll get through it like I got through it in Cleveland," Pettitte said. "They're not going to allow me to do it with an opportunity to push me back several days."

Girardi hopes to get 28-30 starts out of Pettitte, not the 33 they would hope for a pitcher who hasn't logged as many innings as Pettitte has in his 18th season, second since returning from a one-year retirement.

Also, Yankees captain Derek Jeter (ankle surgery) took batting practice on the field and grounders at shortstop at the Yankees facility in Tampa, Fla. He even did a few slower-speed spin moves on balls up the middle.

Hedge fund urges Jones Group to scale back - WSJ

(Reuters) - Activist hedge fund Barington Capital Group is urging fashion company Jones Group Inc to sell parts of its portfolio, the Wall Street Journal reported citing a person familiar with the matter.

Barington Group, which owns about 2 percent of the company's stock, also suggested other options such as cutting costs and adding directors to the board, the journal reported.

The paper reported that Jones confirmed its Chief Executive Wesley Card met with Barington at Barington's request, earlier this month.

The New York-based company behind brands such as Nine West and Jones New York had reported a higher-than-expected profit for the holiday quarter in February, as sales of its shoes and jeans to U.S. department stores picked up.

Jones had then said that as part of its efforts to improve margins, it would be careful about building up too much inventory in 2013.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Barington urged Jones to hire financial advisers to focus on its core and emerging brands.

The company in recent years has benefited from its shift to higher-end brands with the acquisition of names such as Stuart Weitzman and Kurt Geiger and forecast revenue above analysts' estimates for 2013.

(AP) ? A day after Reebok ended its relationship with Rick Ross, the rapper acknowledged that his lyrics on Rocko's song "U.O.E.N.O." were "offensive."

In a statement Friday, Ross said being a musician is "a great responsibility" and that his choice of words in the song "does not reflect my true heart."

In the song, Ross raps about giving a woman the drug MDMA, known as Molly, and having his way with her.

"Put Molly all up in her champagne, she ain't even know it, I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it," he raps on the track released in January. It gained traction in recent weeks after women's groups and rape victims issued petitions.

"Before I am an artist, I am a father, a son, and a brother to some of the most cherished women in the world. So for me to suggest in any way that harm and violation be brought to a woman is one of my biggest mistakes and regrets," his statement said.

On Thursday, Reebok said it had terminated its contract with Ross because the rapper wasn't living "up to the values of our brand." Ross has appeared in a commercial for the Reebok Classic sneakers.

"We are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse," the statement said.

The Miami-based rapper first addressed the song two weeks ago in a radio interview, saying "there was a misunderstanding with the lyric." A week after that, he tweeted an apology. It was the same day the women's group UltraViolet protested outside one of Reebok's stores in Manhattan.

In his official apology, Ross also says men who listen to his music should "know that using a substance to rob a woman of her right to make a choice is not only a crime, it's wrong."

Hits by the Grammy-nominated Ross include "The Boss" and "Aston Martin Music."

BeFunky (for iPhone)

BeFunky's goal is bigger than just to be a good mobile-and-Web photo editor/enhancer: The company wants to create a new, automated way for you to organize and find your photos and those of others, whether you're at a computer's browser or off somewhere with your mobile device. Unlike Instagram, each BeFunky entry point gets full citizenship, so, you can edit and upload photos in the browser as well as in the app. Like Instagram, there are filters and social discovery, but it's more organized, with categories for photo types, such as nature, pets, faces, and so on. Unfortunately, the app and service don't deliver its goals of editing plus discovery as well as the competition.

Getting Started with BeFunky
You can start with BeFunky either by installing the app from the iTunes Store or signing up on the web. Versions are available for iPad and Android as well as iPhone. Doing the latter is streamlined if you simply click the big blue button that uses a certain social network. This requires access to your public profile, friend list, email address, birthday, status updates, photos and your friends' photos. It also requests the ability to post publicly on your behalf, but given BeFunky's purpose, that makes sense. Once you've clicked the two OKs, you've got yourself a fully functional BeFunky page and account. The default profile description is cute: "One magical day a unicorn handed me a camera and showed me BeFunky. The rest is history."?

Interface
The app's Home screen features two large buttons on top: Camera, and Camera Roll. Above this, a Settings gear and a smaller Create button, which you can't use unless you've selected a photo. I'm not sure why this button is even on the home screen, since you can't have a photo selected there. But the largest part of the screen is dedicated to photo thumbnails for categories like Nature, Pets, Love, and Tattoo. Along the bottom are five more buttons, in addition to Home, we get Profile, Explore, My Stream, and Activity. It seems like a couple of these are redundant, and could have been eliminated to make room for the standard Camera icon for shooting pictures that you find in most photo apps.

Editing and Enhancing Photos
For shooting pictures, the app uses the built in iPhone Camera app, so you don't get anything in the way of? extras like separate focus and exposure points. Befunky has a lot more basic photo editing tools than Instagram, including white balance, leveling, fill light, and sharpening. These offer the Snapseed-like swiping gestures to increase and decrease the effects. But these work in an unusual way: You have to hit the Check mark icon once you're happy with an edit, otherwise it will be lost when you swipe over to apply another. There's an Undo arrow, that shows a small thumbnail showing each edit step, rather than actually undoing your last action. At first I found this process odd, but then it seemed to make sense.

Next come the effect filters. Unlike a lot of photo apps that use funky names for these, BeFunky welcomely uses straightforward descriptive names like Cross Process, Instant, and Lomo. I also like how the illustrative thumbnail for each effect shows your actual photo, rather than a sample image like Instagram's balloon. I counted 29 filters in the free app, with a lot of eye-catching choices like Pop Art, Sketch, and Holga. You can purchase even more in categories like Instant, Old Photo, and Duotone for 99 cents each. Alternatively, you can buy the whole set of 65 effects in the form of BeFunky Pro, for $1.99, a seemingly better value.

Borders and frames are a similar deal: You get plenty to choose from in the app, but if those don't meet your visual desires, you can purchase more.

The text feature is something with no equivalent in Instagram. You can choose from six fonts, many background colors (or transparent background over your image), and coolest of all, you can rotate your text on three axes! Happily, you're not restricted to square output, as you are in Instagram.

Mali mayor accused of drug trafficking arrested

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Authorities have arrested a mayor in northeastern Mali on drug trafficking charges three years after a plane full of cocaine landed near his town, officials said Thursday.

Baba Ould Cheick was taken into custody Wednesday morning, according to Alassane S. Toure, who headed the operation.

"We asked the headquarters in Gao to take all necessary measures to transfer him to Bamako as quickly as possible before locals could intervene," Toure told The Associated Press.

Toure didn't provide details about the allegations against Cheick other than to say that there had been a warrant out for his arrest.

Cheick is the mayor of Tarkint, a small village located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of the town of Gao.

In November 2009, a Boeing 727-200 that was believed to be coming from Venezuela landed near Tarkint carrying at least five tons of cocaine aboard.

Officials have identified the Gao region in northeastern Mali as a drug trafficking hub in West Africa.

Many of the trafficking operations, though, have been dislodged by the French-led military intervention to oust radical Islamic fighters who controlled the town of Gao until January.

In 2008, Malian officials seized 750 kilograms (1,650 pounds) of ingredients used to make cocaine, following a nine-hour gunbattle with the suspected drug traffickers.

That operation occurred in the town of Achiboro, located 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) northeast of Mali's capital, Bamako.
