Largest bird alters its foraging due to climate change

Friday, January 13, 2012

Wandering albatrosses have altered their foraging due to changes in wind fields in the southern hemisphere during the last decades. Since winds have increased in intensity and moved to the south, the flight speed of albatrosses increased and they spend less time foraging. As a consequence, breeding success has improved and birds have gained 1 kilogram. These are the results of the study of an international research team published in the latest issue of the Science journal. However, these positive consequences of climate change may last short if future wind fields follow predictions of climate change scenarios, researchers warn.

For this study, biologists had combined data on the duration of foraging trips and breeding success over the last 40 years, as well as foraging and body mass over the last 20 years of wandering albatross (Diomedea exulans) breeding in Crozet Islands. This archipelago lies approximately in the heart of the southern Indian Ocean (halfway between Madagascar and Antarctica). It belongs to the French Southern Territories and it is located in the windiest part of the Southern Ocean. The new findings are the result of an international research team from the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS-CEBC) and the German Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ).

Thanks to miniaturised tracking devices, researchers were able to track the foraging movement of albatrosses at a distance of 3500 kilometers from the colony. They found that albatross have altered their search patterns following changes in wind conditions over the past two decades. Females used increasingly more poleward and windy areas for foraging. As a consequence their travel speed increased while the total distance covered during foraging flights did not change. "This means that they spend less time at sea while incubating the egg and thus the breeding success increases" explains Dr. Henri Weimerskirch of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS-CEBC). Researchers were surprised that both females and males have increased their body mass in one kilogram, which corresponds approximately to one tenth of their total body weight. This could be not only a result of shorter incubation periods on the nest, but also an adaptation to windier conditions.

"The wandering albatross Crozet population has decreased as a result of adult mortality on longline fishing in subtropical waters, especially females since they favour warmer subtropical waters in the north compared to the more southerly distribution of males" says Dr. Maite Louzao Arsuaga, who has been modelling albatross movement from 2009 to 2011 at the UFZ. "Due to the changing wind conditions, females are now foraging in more southward areas where such fishing is not that widespread". However, the positive effects of changing environmental conditions of the last decades will not last in the future. Climate scenarios predict that westerly winds will move even further south by 2080 and wandering albatrosses might have to fly further to find optimal conditions for flying.

The total population of the wandering albatross is currently estimated at around 8,000 breeding pairs. All populations have shown a decrease at some stage over the last 25 years. This endangered species is threatened primarily by incidental catch in fisheries, especially longline fishing at sea, whereas the introduction of alien species (such as rats or cats) are a key conservation threat for the species on breeding colonies. Additionally, the accumulation of anthropogenic debris such as plastic and fishing hooks on albatrosses have negative effects on their populations. Thus, it is important to continue with monitoring programs of population trends and distribution at sea, as well as to undertake effective conservation measures. The foraging habitat of wandering albatrosses is managed by more than one Regional Fisheries Management Organisations, which makes it difficult to implement conservation measures for the species.

The wandering albatross has fascinated people for centuries. With a wingspan of over three meters and a half, it is the largest seabird in the world, surpassing just the Andean condor (Vultur fulvus). This elegant sailor, which spends most of its life flying, breeds on remote subantarctic islands over the Southern Ocean. They travel thousand of kilometers searching for fish and cephalopods like squids, often following ships and feeding on offal. The plumage of wandering albatrosses is variable, whitening with age. The maximum known age is 55 years old. Since the rearing of chicks takes a whole year, they breed only every second year

Apart from the study published in the latest Science issue, the research team has identified the key marine areas for the conservation of wandering albatrosses in the southern Indian Ocean published in 2011 in the Journal of Applied Ecology. This study provided the first map to support the future development of a network of priority protected areas in the southern part of the Indian Ocean, which are based on habitat predictions. "Because the species has no natural enemies and is at the top of the food web, it is particularly well suited as an indicator of the health of marine ecosystems," says Dr. Thorsten Wiegand from the UFZ, who supervised the work of Dr. Maite Louzao. "This could help not only a single species, but the underlying biodiversity associated with pelagic key habitats to protect Southern Ocean. Moreover, we have developed methods of habitat modelling broadly applicable and can be used to assess changes in species distribution within the current global change scenario."

Could Google Chrome overtake Internet Explorer?

by Bruce Tyson

Created on: January 07, 2012

Google?s Chrome Web browser was only a twinkle in Eric Schmidt?s eye just a few short years ago; now it is one of the top Web browsers in the world. With that kind of explosive growth, the browser has already surpassed Mozilla?s Firefox Web browser in popularity and now seems ready to aggressively fight to be the ultimate victor of the browser wars.?

Once Upon a Time ?

In the Internet?s Dark Ages, browsers like Netscape ruled the landscape. At the time, no one knew they were dinosaurs because they were all people had to navigate the World Wide Web. Netscape spawned from an earlier program, Mosaic, that could be thought of as the primeval soup that got the whole browser thing started.

The first battle in the browser wars began in 1995 when Internet Explorer came on the scene. It was from Microsoft and it was free and soon would come bundled with windows; so it took off like a rocket. (Back then some people complained about its sluggishness, clunky interface, compatibility problems and buggy features just as they do today.) Soon after Internet Explorer emerged, all popular browsers would soon be free. By 2002, about 90 percent of the Web browser market was commanded by Microsoft.?

Although Apple launched its Safari Web browser in 2003, the second battle in the browser wars didn?t begin until Firefox strutted onto the battle field the following year. Firefox quickly commanded the respect of the Internet community and took a solid second place in popularity surveys. Then came Google.

Google vs. Firefox

Google surprised its critics when it released its Chrome browser in 2008. Skeptics doubted that the search engine?s venture into the software business could bear much fruit; they were wrong.?In just a few years, Chrome surpassed Firefox as the second most popular browser in the industry. The search giant recently drove a stake through that browser?s heart by yanking the lucrative search deal that infused Mozilla with millions of dollars in cash.?

Google vs. Microsoft

After conquering Firefox, Google has clear intentions for going after its nemesis, Microsoft and its now-flailing Internet Explorer browser.?

According to statistics referenced by CNN,Google Chrome already is nipping at the heels of the Microsoft browser. In December, Google Chrome version 15 users edged out Internet Explorer version 8 users by one-tenth of one percent.?

When all versions of Chrome are surveyed collectively, Chrome has 27 percent of global market share, compared to Internet?s 37 percent. This startling number reveals that in just a short time, Microsoft has lost more than half of its share of the browser market.?

As analysts and pundits continue to analyze what could be the third and final round of the browser wars, many will likely conclude that Google Chrome could overtake Internet Explorer.?

U.S. airlines attempt first fare increase of 2012

U.S. airlines have hiked ticket prices for the first time in the new year.

Delta Air Lines filed a domestic price increase of $20 roundtrip on longer-haul routes this week, a move that major U.S. rivals have started matching, FareCompare.com said on Thursday.

Southwest/AirTran and Frontier quickly matched the fare increase Wednesday night, and American, United/Continental and US Airways raised ticket prices on Thursday.

A Delta spokesman confirmed the report of the carrier's price increase. FareCompare.com called the move the first domestic airfare increase attempt for 2012.

Airlines have boosted fares and are looking for new revenue sources as higher oil prices raise costs and threaten profitability.

Oil prices rebounded on Thursday as the euro rallied and a Nigerian union threatened to shut down output, and U.S. February crude oil was up 1 percent to $102.07 a barrel after hitting a session high of $102.98.

U.S. carriers have also raised ticket prices on flights to Europe in the wake of a disputed European law requiring airlines to pay for aircraft emissions.

American Airlines, United Continental Holdings and US Airways said last week they matched a $3 surcharge each way unveiled by Delta on fares purchased in the United States for flights between the United States and Europe. That move would help offset the cost of the European Union carbon emissions law that took effect this month.

Information from Reuters was included in this report.

Three Ice Cream Sandwich Tablets for 2012 (ContributorNetwork)

Tablets powered by Android -- Google's open-source operating system for smartphones and tablets -- failed to make much of a splash in 2011. The iPad simply eclipsed them all put together, and then HP won the sales race for also-rans when it put its TouchPad on sale for $99.

Only the Kindle Fire and Nook Color/Nook Tablet managed to sell very well against the iPad. Both are powered by Android "under the hood," but neither run Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android, which introduces many new features and solves most of the bugs that Honeycomb had.

Here are three confirmed tablets that will run the "full" Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android, and will be available soon.

Acer Iconia Tab A200

What does the new Iconia Tab have going for it, to put it ahead of the pack? A 10.1-inch screen and a $349 price tag for the standard 16 GB version. (An 8 GB version will also be available for $329.)

According to Geoff Duncan of Digital Trends, it will come with Android 3.2 Honeycomb when it launches on Jan. 15, but will be "upgradable" to Ice Cream Sandwich in February. Its other stats are typical of last year's high-end Android tablets, except for its full-size USB port.

Toshiba Excite X10

Cameron Summerson of Android Police had a hands-on preview of this upcoming tablet, which is "expected to be available" sometime in the first quarter. It will have a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 10.1-inch display. MicroSD and miniHDMI ports are standard. Prices will start at $530 for the 16 GB model, and it will come with Android 3.2 and be "Ice Cream Sandwich ready."

So what makes the Excite X10 worth its price tag? That's debatable, but at only 7.7 millimeters thick it'll be the thinnest tablet in the world when it comes out.

Lenovo IdeaTab K2

Brandon Lancaster of Android Police summarizes Engadget's hands-on: This 10-inch behemoth has a 1,920-by-1,200 IPS display, with more than twice the resolution of a normal 10-inch tablet and full non-washed out color from any angle. It also has a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, plus a fingerprint scanner that can be used as a mouse-style pointing device (or will be once it's ready).

According to Engadget's Richard Lai, however, the IdeaTab K2 will be released in China first. There's no word yet on when it will reach the States or how much it will cost. But with those specs, it will probably be expensive, as it's "aimed at high-end business users".

Jared Spurbeck is an open-source software enthusiast, who uses an Android phone and an Ubuntu laptop PC. He has been writing about technology and electronics since 2008.
