97% The Artist

The Artist is a black and white silent movie set in the late 1920s and continuing into the 1930s about two actors and how the arrival of sound in motion pictures impacts their silent movie careers. This is undeniably one of the most brilliant films in recent years. It's charming, witty, funny, shocking, emotional, and a delight from start to end. If you've never seen a silent film before, this is the perfect one to start with. It not only homages the genre, but embraces it and reminds us of a lost palette that still holds up after 80 years of absence. The Artist's most endearing quality is how anyone of any age can enjoy this film no matter what genres peak their interest. I had the pleasure of spending it with an audience full of demographics that was just as alive as the images on the silver screen. The film's only fault in my opinion, which may be the film's greatest strength, is how it takes the aged art of early cinema and cleans it up with minimal scratching, bigger scaled shots, occasional CGI, and the introduction of sound (which may in fact be the film's highest point considering the film's plot). It doesn't matter if you're into stoner comedies or somber dramadies, The Artist is definitely one that can't be missed.

Washington H.S. Basketball Player Becomes Public Enemy #1 After Flagrant Fouls Go Viral

Connell (Wash.) High's Cole Vanderbilt was an unknown in the basketball world, but all that changed two days ago, when he became one of the most hated players around.

A viral YouTube video of some of his hilariously uncalled flagrant fouls turned him into a pariah. He can thank Michael Christenson, who filmed the Connell-Highland game.

He was trying to show that the league needed better officials, but he made Vanderbilt and Kennan VanHollebeke look like the dirtiest players ever in the process.

Fair? Unfair? Check out the compilation of their fouls below:

Google Chrome Beta Released, Now Even Faster and More Secure (Mashable)

Google Chrome has announced a new beta that speeds up the world's second-favorite browser even more, as well as enhances its security. According to the official Google Chrome blog, the new beta release of the Chrome browser, version 17.0 .963.26 beta-m, gains some of its additional speed by "loading some Web pages in the background, even before you finish typing the URL in the omnibox."

[More from Mashable: Instagram Photos Now Show Up Full Size on Facebook]

Google announced at the same time the Chrome beta will offer additional protection against malicious websites and their malevolent downloads. Software engineer Dominic Hamon wrote in the Google Chrome blog post that this beta version includes "expanded functionality to analyze executable files (such as ?.exe? and ?.msi? files) that you download." Chrome will notify users with a warning that they should discard such files. Hamon added that the company will be making Chrome smarter in the coming months, allowing it to detect even more malicious files.

I downloaded the latest Chrome beta and tested it, and it certainly feels faster. It downloaded and installed without a hitch, and it seems stable so far. As I typed a web address I often visit into Chrome's address window (called the "omnibox," where all the searching and URLs appear in Chrome), it did feel like it popped up faster.

I'll keep testing this beta browser to see if I run into any bugs. You can try the new test release by downloading the Chrome beta here. By the way, while Chrome is the world's second favorite browser, Google Chrome 15 beat out Internet Explorer 8 as the world's most popular browser version.

You say you don't care about dating a hottie?

Friday, January 6, 2012

Stating that you don't care if you land a partner who is "hot" or "sexy" is relatively commonplace. But what people say they want and what they actually want are often two very different things when it comes to romantic attraction.

However, a new methodology that measures people's implicit, split-second responses gets around this problem. Research from Northwestern University and Texas A&M University measures whether people's implicit preferences actually predict how much you like the hotties.

"People will readily tell you what they value in a romantic partner," said Eli Finkel, associate professor of psychology at Northwestern and co-author of the study. "But study after study shows that those preferences don't predict whom daters are actually attracted to when they meet flesh-and-blood partners. Now we can get under the hood with this quirky methodology to see what people actually prefer in live-interaction settings."

Paul W. Eastwick, assistant professor of psychology at Texas A&M University and lead author of the study, says that the findings raise questions about the way we determine what people want in a partner.

"If a person tells me, for example, that she doesn't care about how attractive a guy is, our research suggests that her claim isn't worth all that much," Eastwick said. "Instead, it would actually be more useful to measure her reaction times on this new task."

Focused on physical attractiveness, the implicit measure in this study was based on reaction times to various words flashed in the middle of a computer screen. Participants' task was to quickly sort synonyms of "physical attractiveness" with other words that they happen to like, such as tequila, or motorcycles, or romance novels. According to the researchers, the people who perform well on this task have a strong implicit preference for physical attractiveness.

Along with Eastwick and Finkel, other co-authors of the study include Alice H. Eagly, professor of psychology and faculty fellow in the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern, and Sarah E. Johnson, a doctoral graduate of Northwestern.

"In many cases, people's consciously stated attitudes and preferences predict their behavior quite well," Eagly said. "But in the case of attraction, people's implicit, unconscious preferences seem to do a better job."

A number of psychology studies reveal a disconnect between stated preferences for partners and actual choices. Most of the studies use explicit measures in which people consciously report what appeals to them in a partner. In this new study, the implicit measure that the researchers developed predicted how much the participants liked physically attractive potential partners, both at a speed-dating event and in a face-to-face interaction in the laboratory.

"People's reports of why they like certain partners might not be especially accurate," Eastwick said. "But that doesn't mean that romantic desire is random. The reasons might still be there, hovering just outside of conscious awareness."

The study, "Implicit and Explicit Preferences for Physical Attractiveness in a Romantic Partner: A Double Dissociation in Predictive Validity," appeared in the November issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

WBAL's Keith Mills reports that Baltimore Ravens Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron is a Cancer survivor. During an interview with Cameron Thursday on how Loyola High School student Matthew Costello will be honored during this year's Ed Block Courage Awards, Cameron revealed that he survived malignant melanoma 18 years ago when he was a 32 year old young coach at the University of Michigan. Cameron says Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler noticed a spot on Cameron's back that turned out to be a malignant mole. Trinity Structural Towers, a subsidiary of Trinity Industries, announced that it filed a breach of contract law suit against Suzlon Wind Energy Corporation for failure to comply with its purchasing obligations for structural wind towers from TSTI pursuant to the 2008 Supply Agreement between the two companies. The law suit was filed in the District Court of Dallas County. In accordance with the Agreement, Suzlon agreed to purchase approximately $377.3M worth of TSTI-manufactured 80-meter wind towers on a scheduled basis through 2011.
